Farnborough 2012 Dag 4

Breitling Jet Team stranded at Cotswold Airport

An aerobatic jet display team has been delayed en route to the Farnborough Airshow after getting stranded at Cotswold Airport where a plane crashed.
A 47-year-old pilot from Belgium suffered serious burns when the Bronco aircraft he was flying crashed on Tuesday.

The runway has been closed until at least Friday for surface inspections.

Members of the Breitling Jet Team said they were "confident" of arriving in time for the show on Friday.
The team, which is based in Dijon, France, has eight aircraft at the airport in Kemble after taking part in the Royal International Air Tattoo at Fairford.

Team leader Jacques Bothelin said: "We have jets and the only way to get them to Farnborough is to fly them.
"At the moment we are not in a critical situation. We have to be in Farnborough on Friday and we are confident about the fact that we will be there on time.

Virgin Galactic founder and CEO Sir Richard Branson
Virgin Galactic founder and CEO Sir Richard Branson believes there is a high demand for private space travel.
At $200,000 a ticket it isn’t cheap but it is definitely out of this world and you get a great view. Virgin Galactic’s plans to be the first space tourism business really took off after SpaceShipOne won the Ansari X-Prize back in 2004. Now, 529 “astronauts” (around 85 flights worth) have booked their tickets to go up in SpaceShipTwo (SS2), a six-seat (plus two pilots) all-composite ship of novel design–as can be seen here in the Farnborough airshow static park

The Omega Air KDC-10 tanker is here to remind visitors that a contract air refueling service is readily available. It brought the two Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornets across the Atlantic to Farnborough last week; the U.S. Navy is Omega’s prime customer, buying about 85 percent of the Irish company’s tanking output, which was nearly 1,600 hours last year with the KDC-10 and three KC-707s

Mitsubishi Aircraft received a huge dose of credibility at the Farnborough International airshow yesterday by announcing a 100-aircraft commitment for MRJ90s from the largest regional airline holding company in the world–SkyWest Airlines. The agreement in principle, signed just this week, potentially raises the MRJ regional jet family backlog to 170 airplanes and gives Mitsubishi its second major U.S. customer.

Big United Airlines order expected at Farnborough

FARNBOROUGH, England (AP) - Airbus unveiled a further set of orders Thursday in what has been a subdued performance at the Farnborough Airshow, ahead of an expected big deal between Boeing and United Airlines.

Sponsored LinksThe European aircraft manufacturer, a subsidiary of EADS, said it booked a potential $6.35 billion worth of orders. The four deals, if completed, take Airbus' total by the fourth day of the U.K. airshow to $16.9 billion for a total of 115 aircraft.

Airbus said it won commitments to buy 61 aircraft worth $5.8 billion and firm purchase orders for 54 aircraft worth around $11.1 billion.

Airbus' total was way down on last year's record total at the Paris Airshow of $72 billion - the French capital and alternate aviation industry showcase venue with Farnborough.

The decline in orders is no surprise given the gloomy global economic backdrop and the scale of last year's success, when the European aircraft manufacturer trumped Boeing with a series of deals for its revised short-haul aircraft, the A320neo. Boeing's orders last year totaled a little more than $22 billion.

FARNBOROUGH: Yak-130's engine intakes cause confusion

The Irkut-built Yakovlev Yak-130 trainer almost failed to get off the ground for its Farnborough debut because of a misunderstanding with air traffic authorities, vice-president Konstantin Popovich has revealed.
During a media presentation intended to highlight the capabilities of the advanced jet and combat trainer, he said one of the type's innovative design features had caused more than a bit of confusion.
"We had problems on the first day at the show. We were told that we couldn't take off because our air intakes were closed," said Popovich, who is also head of the Yakovlev engineering centre.
Irkut officials had to swiftly explain that the Yak-130 is equipped with fly-by-wire system-controlled engine-intake blanking doors, which are intended to prevent the aircraft's engines from sustaining foreign object damage when operating on unprepared runways or grass strips.
While conceding that this is perhaps a "peculiar feature", Popovich said the company was surprised by the concerned reaction. "The tower still asked if we were sure the aircraft can take off like this," he added.

United Makes $14.7 Billion Boeing Order

United Airlines placed a big $14.7 billion order with Boeing, selecting 100 of the re-engined 737 Max 9s and 50 current generation 737-900ERs.

United is the launch customer in the United States for the 737 Max 9, which can seat up to 180 passengers and is equipped with the LEAP-1B engines from CFM International for improved fuel-efficiency.

“This order is a major step in building the world's leading airline, and we look forward to offering our customers the modern features and reliability of new Boeing airplanes, while also making our fleet more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly," said Jeff Smisek, president and CEO of United. "New aircraft deliveries support our flexible fleet plan, permitting us to tailor future capacity up or down, based on changes in demand or other market conditions.”

Boeing has seen increased interest in its 737 aircraft family at the 2012 Farnborough Air Show. This week, the airframe manufacturer announced a firm $7.2 billion order for 75 737 Max aircraft.

“To witness the first commercial airplane to surpass 10,000 orders is monumental,” said Beverly Wyse, vice president and general manager of the Boeing 737 program.
