EMT is offering to equip its unmanned air vehicles with a combination of an ADS-B transponder and a light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensor to provide operators with an enhanced sense and avoid capability.
Developed in conjunction with engineering firm Spies and Germany's Federal Office of Budeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support, the LIDAR fit was recently tested with EMT's Museco unmanned helicopter.
"The sense and avoid sensor serves to recognise and automatically avoid other aircraft in the vicinity," says EMT. "The combination of transponder and active LIDAR improves flight security significantly."

The recent tests followed an almost decade-long activity to investigate the use of LIDAR technology with unmanned vehicles. A first-generation sensor was flight tested by the partners during 2005.
