IAG Orders 18 A350s for British Airways

International Airlines Group (IAG) placed a $6 billion order for 18 Airbus A350s for British Airways, and secured terms and delivery slots for firm orders for Iberia Airlines.

The British Airways order includes options for 18 additional A350s, which would increase the value to $12 billion, according to current Airbus list prices.

The orders for Iberia will not be secured until the Spanish carrier is in a position to grow profitably, after restructuring and reducing its cost base.

“The A350-1000 will bring many benefits to our fleet. Its size and range will be an excellent fit for our existing network and, with lower unit costs, there is an opportunity to operate a new range of destinations profitably. This will not only bring greater flexibility to our network but also more choice for our customer,” said Willie Walsh, IAG chief executive.

British Airways will take delivery of its first A380 this summer, the result of a 2007 order for 12 A380s.
