Captain Eric Brown holds the World Record for number of different types
flown – at 487.
On 1 May in Farnborough, UK, Guiness World Record Holder and legendary
British test pilot Captain Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown, CBE, DSC, AFC, HonFRAeS
RN gave a lecture in support of a project to build a statue to Britiain’s first
‘test pilot’ S.F. Cody.
In this 40 minute lecture Captain Brown speaks without notes on the lure of
speed, the motivation of test pilots, his time on the aircraft carrier HMS
Audacity and his outstanding flight test career.
Captain Brown’s life spans meeting a WW1 ace, visiting the 1936 Olympics,
carrier aviation, flying captured WW2 axis aircraft, and post-war jet and
supersonic research. A fluent German speaker, he also interrogated many
leading German aviation and space experts – including Kurt Tank and Werner
Von Braun. He was also friends with the late Apollo astronaut Neil Armstrong,
and is also a Past-President of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
A remarkable lecture by a remarkable aviator.
