FAA Plans Small UAS Rule Later This Year

Woodrow Bellamy III
[Avionics Today June 25, 2014] The FAA is planning to publish a "broad proposed rule" regulating the commercial use of small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) later this year. Operations and technological specifications form the rule will apply to UAS weighing less than 55 pounds, the agency said.
The announcement from the FAA came along with its opening of a commentary period where the agency will hear public opinions about drafting a final decision on allowing operators to use UAS to provide aerial coverage for film and television companies. Seven different companies have filed exemption requests with the FAA to start operating UAS for these purposes.

Exemptions have also been filed for the operational use of UAS to perform precision agriculture, aerial surveying and flare stack inspections.

"Interested parties will have 20 days to send in comments," the FAA said in a statement. "The agency expects to publish a broad proposed rule for small UAS (under 55 pounds) later this year."
