GKN Issues 221 Redundancies at Leonardo Plant
Starting as early as Dec. 1, 221 employees at GKN Aerospace's plant in Yeovil, England, could lose their jobs. Britain and Ireland's largest trade union, Unite, said it is urging the government to implement its new "industrial strategy" before issuing redundancies becomes a nationwide trend.
On Monday, 221 redundancy notices were issued at the Leonardo airframes production facility. Unite speculates that the Italian manufacturer wants to move the production back to Italy. Leonardo currently manufactures the Royal Navy's AW159 Wildcats at the Yeovil facility. However, the union is faced with many unanswered questions and plans to campaign for a retraction of the redundancies citing inadequate rationale from GKN.
Questions about rationale have been raised in the form of a letter written to GKN Aerostructures Europe and Asia CEO John Pritchard. Unite hopes to effectively defend GKN Yeovil jobs — the loss of which foreshadows closure of the entire site.
