Germany signs on for Five Boeing P-8A Poseidon Aircraft

BERLIN, June 30, 2021 — The German Ministry of Defense today signed a letter of offer and acceptance for five Boeing (NYSE:BA) P-8A Poseidon aircraft under the U.S. government’s Foreign Military Sales (FMS) process. With this order, Germany becomes the eighth customer of the multimission maritime surveillance aircraft, joining the United States, Australia, India, the United Kingdom, Norway, Korea and New Zealand.

The P-8A Poseidon offers unique multimission capability and is the only aircraft in service and in production that meets the full range of maritime challenges faced by European nations. Deployed around the world with more than 130 aircraft in service, and over 300,000 collective flight hours, the P-8A is vital for global anti-submarine warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and search-and-rescue operations.

Herndon, Virginia, 29 June 2021 - United Airlines has placed an order for 70 Airbus A321neo aircraft, positioning the airline to grow its presence in the single-aisle market in alignment with its “United Next” initiative.  The new order complements existing orders from United for 50 A321XLR aircraft, bringing the total commitment from the airline to 120 A321 aircraft.

Another reason the A321neo is in such high demand globally is that the aircraft provides superior environmental performance with the lowest CO emissions per seat in its class. The A321neo’s lower carbon footprint will support United along its journey to reduce the airline’s CO emissions 100% by 2050. 

United’s A321neo aircraft will feature Airbus’ Airspace cabin design, which brings the following passenger-pleasing enhancements: unique welcome and customizable hero lighting (which helps reduce jet lag); new slimmer sidewall panels for extra personal space at shoulder level; better views through the windows with their redesigned bezels and completely integrated window shades; the latest full LED lighting technologies; the largest overhead bin in class; and new lavatories with hygienic touchless features and antimicrobial surfaces.

SEATTLE, June 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE:BA] and United Airlines today announced the carrier will expand its 737 order book by purchasing an additional 200 737 MAX jets, including 150 for the largest member of the family, the 737-10, and 50 for the airplane that serves the heart of the single-aisle market, the 737-8. The new purchase positions United's fleet for growth and accelerating demand for air travel.

The purchase increases United's order book for the fuel-efficient, single-aisle family to 380 airplanes, including 30 that have been delivered. As the launch customer for the 737-10, United placed its first order in 2017 by converting 100 737-9 orders to the larger 737-10 variant. Today's agreement also includes the purchase of Boeing 737 MAX training simulator data packages to support United's pilot training programs.

Designed and built in Renton, Washington, the 737 MAX family delivers superior efficiency, flexibility and reliability while reducing fuel use and carbon emissions by at least 14% compared to the airplanes it replaces. The 737-8 seats up to 189 passengers and can fly 3,550 nautical miles – about 600 miles farther than its predecessor – allowing airlines to offer new and more direct routes for passengers.

The largest model in the family, the 737-10 seats up to 230 passengers in a single-class configuration and can fly up to 3,300 miles. The fuel-efficient jet can cover 99% of single-aisle routes, including routes served by 757s.

Russian S-400 Systems Launch Simulated Missiles at ‘Control Targets’ During NATO Exercise

Russian S-400 and Pantsir-S air defense Systems ‘tracked and launched simulated missiles at control targets’ during Sea Breeze exercises in which Ukraine, the U.S. and other NATO countries that started in the Black Sea Monday.

About 20 aircraft and helicopters, several divisions of the S-400 and Pantsir-S air defense systems conducted a training check in Crimea against the backdrop of the Sea Breeze exercises in the Black Sea, Interfax reported quoting the press service of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

"In total, about 20 aircraft and helicopters were involved in the check, including Su-24MR reconnaissance aircraft, Su-27 and Su-30SM multipurpose fighters, Su-24M front-line bombers and Mi-8 and Ka-27 helicopters, as well as divisions the S-400 Triumph and Pantsir systems from the Air Force and Air Defense Association of the Southern Military District, "the Russian Black Sea Fleet said on Tuesday.

"During the check, the aviation component performed the task both at the maximum distance from the detection zones of radar stations, and at ultra-low altitudes, using the terrain for cover, which significantly complicated the task for air defense forces,” the report said.

The Russian military said, "The forces of the Black Sea Fleet carried out a set of measures to control the actions of the ships of NATO participating in the Sea Breeze 2021 exercise, which started on June 28, 2021 in the northwestern part of the Black Sea," the statement said.

The Sea Breeze-2021 involves 32 warships, 40 aircraft and 5,000 servicemen from 17 NATO member countries, as well as alliance partners. In total, military personnel from 32 countries are expected to participate.

On June 26, the American missile destroyer USS Ross entered the Black Sea. It can carry up to 56 Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of 1.6 thousand km. The British destroyer Defender and the Dutch frigate Evertsen are also in the Black Sea since June 14.

Sea Breeze 21 begins in the Black Sea after Russia threatens to fire on ‘intruding’ warships

Just days after Russia threatened to fire on “intruding” warships near the Crimean Peninsula in the Black Sea, the annual Sea Breeze exercise, which U.S. 6th Fleet is co-hosting with the Ukrainian Navy, kicked off Monday with the largest number ever of participating countries.Sea Breeze 21, which continues through July 10 in the Black Sea region, focuses on amphibious warfare, land maneuver warfare, diving operations, maritime interdiction operations, air defense, special operations integration, anti-submarine warfare and search and rescue operations, according to a 6th Fleet news release.

Thirty-two countries from six continents are providing 5,000 troops, 32 ships, 40 aircraft, and 18 special operations and dive teams to the exercise.

“The United States is proud to partner with Ukraine in co-hosting the multinational maritime exercise Sea Breeze, which will help enhance interoperability and capabilities among participating nations,” said Chargé d’Affaires Kristina Kvien, U.S. Embassy in Ukraine. “We are committed to maintaining the safety and security of the Black Sea.”

The exercise gets underway just five days after Russia announced that one of its warships fired warning shots and a warplane dropped bombs in the path of British destroyer Defender to drive it away from waters near the Crimean city of Sevastopol, the main Russian naval base in Crimea. Britain denied that account, insisted there were no warning shots or bombs dropped near its ship and that it was sailing in Ukrainian waters.

The Russian Defense Ministry said June 23 a patrol ship fired warning shots because the HMS Defender ignored a notice against intrusion and sailed 1.6 nautical miles into Russia’s territorial waters. It claimed a Russian Su-24 bomber also dropped four bombs ahead of the vessel to persuade the Defender to change course. Minutes later, the Defender left Russian waters, the ministry said.

Britain insisted the ship was making a routine journey through an internationally recognized travel lane and remained in Ukrainian waters. The U.K., like most of the world, recognizes Crimea as part of Ukraine despite the peninsula’s 2014 annexation by Russia.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson would not say whether he had personally approved the Defender’s voyage but suggested the Royal Navy was making a point by taking that route.

“The important point is that we don’t recognize the Russian annexation of Crimea, this is part of a sovereign Ukrainian territory,” Johnson told reporters. “It was entirely right that we should vindicate the law and pursue freedom of navigation in the way that we did, take the shortest route between two points, and that’s what we did.”

The incident marked the first time since the Cold War that Moscow claimed tp have used live ammunition to deter a NATO warship, underlining the rising threat of military collisions amid Russia-West tensions.

Exercise Sea Breeze, which began in 1997, brings most Black Sea nations and NATO allies and partners together to train and operate in the pursuit of building increased capability.

The nations taking part include: Albania, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, France, Georgia, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Morocco, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Senegal, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.

New Russian Drones for the Arctic Region


In June 2021, Russian IT company ‘Radar MMS’ unveiled a number of their latest technologies, including a cargo drone that’s capable of even secretly carrying hundreds of kilos of cash (yes, you heard it right) and a UAV that can save drowning people after a ship accident or a helicopter crash on water.

Both of these machines are capable of working in temperatures ranging from +45°C (+113°F) to -70°C (-94°F). Now they are being actively used and tested in the commercial sector of business transportation in the Arctic region of Russia.

Drones are actively developing in Russia and around the world. They are used in logistics, cartography and to search minerals among other industrial uses. At the same time, they can be used to deliver money, mail, parcels and other goods.

Specialists at ‘Radar MMS’ are working in this direction.

“We use our unmanned aerial vehicles, our equipment-magnetometers and optoelectronic systems in the interests of various customers. So, with Gazprom, we have worked out a number of cases to deliver industrial goods, as well as the exploration of oil and gas fields,” says Ivan Antsev, Candidate of Technical Sciences and Executive Director of Radar MMS.

Currently, the cargo delivery market in the hard-to-reach regions is actively developing. There are places where road transport takes four or five hours. At the same time, it can be covered by a drone in just 10-15 minutes.

According to Antsev, the helicopter-drone max flight duration is somewhere around 3.5-4 hours at a speed of 120 km/h. These machines have synthetic vision – they independently read the landscape of the territory over which they fly and can avoid obstacles.

“Together with Sberbank, we have completed a pilot project for the delivery of documents and money in the Samara and Chelyabinsk regions. The collectors installed special sealed containers with valuable cargo on our drone, we placed it on the aircraft and sent it to the specified point. There, he was met by another collector, took the container and then the drone returned,” he says.

At the same time, the drone is well protected. Its route may differ each time and the altitude of the flight is almost inaccessible to intruders. For example, if it flies at an altitude of 500 meters (1,640 ft), then you are unlikely to see or hear it. Worth mentioning helicopter-type aircraft that can climb up to 4 thousand meters (13,123 ft).

Today, manned helicopters are used for operational logistics in hard-to-reach regions. For comparison, the cost of one flight hour for the most common Mi-8 helicopter in the region starts from 100 thousand rubles (approx. $1,385). This includes maintenance, pilot’s salary and fuel, regardless of the aircraft’s payload.

The cost of a UAV flight hour for similar tasks will vary, depending on the volume of transportation, from 5-10 thousand rubles to 30 thousand rubles (approx. $69-$138), depending on the device. This is still significantly cheaper than a manned helicopter or airplane.

The drone of the company ‘Radar MMS’ is a direct analogue of UAVs used by Amazon, DHL and Google, which are actively developing the logistics direction with the help of aircraft drones.

“We are catching up with the Americans and the Chinese in this direction. This sector is now more developed than ours, because the goods are delivered regularly by helicopter-besplilotnikov and over long distances. For example, China already uses unmanned cargo delivery over long distances: both for 1 thousand and 2 thousand km,”

says Dmitry Safonov, a former military analyst at the Izvestia newspaper.

According to him, domestic drones are not inferior to foreign counterparts. “We are in the role of catching up. The Americans and the Chinese have already flown thousands of such drones. We are still only getting such machines. That’s the whole difference,” the expert adds.

The company also presented a search and rescue drone called ‘Aurora’ with artificial intelligence, which can independently find drowning people during a shipwreck and open into a life raft.

“This is a robot with artificial intelligence and neurotechnology, which searches for people in the sea due to its ‘technical vision’. This is our development and our know-how,”

boasts Ivan Antsev, Candidate of Technical Sciences and Executive Director of ‘Radar MMS’.

According to him, the artificial intelligence of the drone is loaded with special neurons and data that identify people among the wreckage of ships in the water.

“Our robot is already used by the Ministry of Emergency Situations,” Antsev adds.

As he notes, he is not aware of foreign analogues that independently (without the participation of the operator) search for people at the crash site and swim up to them.

At the crash site, the ‘Aurora’ is dropped from unmanned helicopters equipped with search locators, optical and electronic stations.

Such a helicopter can take off and land on any unequipped sites both in the city and at sea. At the same time, it is able to detect an object (from a sinking ship to an oil field) in conditions of rain and fog – in other words, in conditions of zero visibility.

Currently, there are two types of helicopters of this type. One of them can take up to 150 kg of cargo and another one is a single rescue drone.

Each of the machines monitors the area around the distance of several kilometers, and “sees” everything in the water from 100 meters altitude.

Currently, the ‘Radar MMS’ helicopter drones, in addition to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, are used by Gazprom and Rosneft for search and rescue operations on oil and gas rigs in the open sea, as well as for the search for new oil and gas fields on the shelf and under water.

Drone Catches Polluting Ship Off Lithuanian Coast

 


With over 270 flight hours of pollution patrolling in Lithuania on behalf of the Lithuanian authorities, Nordic Unmanned identified more than 10 cases of non-compliant vessels, with one shipping company being fined €10.000 for sulphur pollution. This vessel became the first known violator in the world to be fined under the new IMO 2020 regulation, using drone enforcement.

“Our drone monitoring service represents an effective enforcing of new regulations, as shown by our recent operations in Lithuania. By operating daily for over at least 5 hours, our clients experience a massive increase in the amount of vessel they are able to inspect”.

Lithuanian authorities could also report that only every fourth ship entering Lithuania was inspected before the implementation of drone monitoring. Now, they monitor around 70-80% of the ships entering Lithuania, with a drone that flies for at least 5 hours a day.

Additionally, it is expected that in the European Union, around 2-3% of inspected ships are non- compliant with sulphur emission requirements, but based on the data from the drone monitoring operations, the percentage of non-compliance seems to be a lot higher than the expected 2-3%

US Navy awards Sikorsky $879M contract for CH-53K helicopters

Sikorsky has delivered three operational CH-53K King Stallion heavy lift helicopters to the U.S. Marine Corps in Jacksonville, N.C. (Sikorsky)

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Navy has awarded Sikorsky a contract to build nine more CH-53K King Stallion heavy lift helicopters, with language added into the contract to continue bringing down the cost of the aircraft as the firm gains production experience.

The Lot 5 contract includes $878.7 million for nine helicopters, as well as an option for a Lot 6 contract that would buy nine more helos for $852.5 million, according to a Naval Air Systems Command statement.

The Lot 5 contract brings the cost of Sikorsky’s portion of the helicopter down to $97.6 million apiece, and the Lot 6 contract would reduce that to $94.7 million apiece, according to NAVAIR. This cost does not include the engine or other government-furnished equipment. The cost per helicopter under the most recent Lot 4 contract appears to be about $102.1 million: NAVAIR stated the per-unit cost from Lot 4 to Lot 6 had dropped by $7.4 million.

“This contract award is a testament to the hard work and dedication from the team to execute this critical program in support of the U.S. Marine Corps’ heavy lift requirement,” Col. Jack Perrin, the heavy lift helicopter program manager, said in the NAVAIR statement.

The Lot 5 low-rate initial production contract, awarded June 25, increases the number of CH-53Ks on contract to 33. These nine Lot 5 aircraft are to be delivered in 2024.

Sikorsky has delivered the first three CH-53Ks since October 2020.

According to a Sikorsky statement, the Lot 6 option would be executed no later than February 2022, using fiscal 2022 funds that are currently under discussion in Congress.

“Our aggressive focus on quality and affordability and strong government-industry partnership has successfully reduced the aircraft price. We look forward to expanding our digital-build and production and delivering this advanced heavy lift aircraft as quickly as possible to the Marine Corps, joint force, and our allies,” Bill Falk, Sikorsky’s CH-53K program director, said in the company’s statement. “Our nationwide network of suppliers is contributing to cost reduction efforts and this award will continue our collaboration, realizing even more efficiencies.”

The Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 1 previously flew three system demonstration test article aircraft out of Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, for training ahead of the initial operational test and evaluation phase, which will begin in July. During that phase, the Marine Corps will evaluate how the CH-53K performs in realistic operating conditions, ranging from ships at sea to dusty and sandy environments ashore.

“The delivery of three CH-53K King Stallion helicopters is significant in that it continues the training process for the Marines, ensuring a smooth entry into service for this intelligent aircraft that offers dramatic improvements in performance, survivability, reliability and maintenance for the Marines’ 21st century missions,” Falk said in the statement.

“As the long-range logistic support backbone for the U.S. Marine Corps, it is essential that we get this critical capability to the fleet as quickly and as affordably as possible,” Perrin said in the Navy statement.

Air Force activates first of its kind wing for spectrum

WASHINGTON — The Air Force officially activated June 25 a new, first of its kind wing aimed at the increasing importance of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing, which has been in the works for more than a year, received the designation to start work from Air Combat Command June 25, a release said. The group hopes to enable, equip and optimize the fielding of EMS capabilities with the aim of providing a sustainable and competitive advantage in the non-physical realm. The wing will also provide maintenance, operational and technical expertise for electronic warfare support.

The wing is headquartered at Eglin Air Force Base while a permanent location is chosen. It reports to the Air Force Warfare Center, which performs operational test and evaluation, tactics development, and advanced training.

In recent years, adversaries have noted how U.S. forces are reliant in the spectrum and have sought to disrupt them by adopting high-tech methods to block access and jam or spoof communications.

“The competition in the electromagnetic spectrum is more important than ever before. The Joint Force is connected by and delivers effects in and through the EMS,” Col. William Young, commander of the 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing, said. “If we lose the fight in the EMS, we will lose the fights in all other domains. We’re here to help make sure that doesn’t happen. Standing up this unit emphasizes the Air Force’s commitment to consolidating and modernizing our entire enterprise so that joint warfighters have freedom to attack, maneuver and protect themselves at the time, place and parameters of our choosing.”

The wing is the result of a yearlong study the Air Force kicked off in 2018 that examined the service’s approach to the electromagnetic spectrum.

“The activation of the 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing is the latest step the Air Force has taken to maintain our competitive advantage in electromagnetic warfare,” Maj. Gen. Case Cunningham, commander of the Air Force Warfare Center, said. “Placing this critical mission under a wing commander dedicated to this mission set is fundamental to accelerating needed change and ensuring our warfighters can continue to fight and win in the EMS.”

The wing’s activation is also one piece to a larger multifaceted approach the Air Force is taking to reinvigorate its operations within the electromagnetic sphere to gain an advantage against adversaries. Other methods include reorganizing headquarters staff and modernizing legacy equipment.
