EASA Safety Report Shows Accidents Up, Fatalities DownThe European Aviation Safety Agency’s 2011 safety report shows that while “the number of fatal accidents in scheduled operations remained high at 16, the related number of fatalities to passengers dropped from 658 in 2010 to 330 in 2011.“ The 32 total accidents in 2011 did represent a higher number than last year (28) and also a higher one than the average in the previous decade (30). Interestingly, when looking at EASA’s general aviation category for aircraft weighing more than 2,250 kg (4,960 pounds), a typical starting weight for aircraft used regularly for business in the U.S., the most frequent cause of fatal accidents over the last 10 years was loss of control. In the business aviation category, the EASA report shows that there has been just one fatal accident each year in the past decade to aircraft registered in an EASA Member State. The European Coordination Centre for Accident and Incident Reporting Systems, the central repository of safety data for EASA member states, showed a dramatic increase in the participation of data-sharing by those member states.
