Pacific Coast To Upgrade
Tac Air Twin Otter Avionics
Three de Havilland Canada DHC-6-300
Twin Otters operated by Tac Air out of Coronado, Calif., are getting a new
outlook on life thanks to Pacific Coast Avionics. The Aurora, Ore. company has a contract to design
and install custom panels and a new avionics system. The aircraft are used for
civilian and military jump training. Dewey Conroy, Pacific Coast Avionics’ v-p
and COO, said, “Since these aircraft are used primarily in a local flight
environment, the emphasis was placed on safety of flight rather than more
sophisticated long-range navigation. The install package for these aircraft is
indicative of our ability to match the equipment to the mission and provide the
customer with the best value for his upgrade investment.” The package is
standardized for all three aircraft and includes Aspen Avionics Evolution 2000
dual-screen EFIS; Garmin GNS 530W GPS navcom; Garmin GMA 340 audio panel; dual
Garmin GTX 327 mode-C transponders; and an Avidyne TAS-620 traffic system. The
upgrade per aircraft costs $65,000 and takes four weeks to accomplish. “The
emphasis of this system is greater situational awareness and flight status
information for the pilot,” Conroy told AIN.
