Bird Detection System Launched
Xsight Systems, the same company that developed a system for detecting foreign object debris, recently introduced BirdWize, a software product for reducing bird strikes by more effective tracking of ground-level bird threats. According to Xsight, “forty-four percent of the most damaging bird strikes occur on the ground, with more than 40 percent of those bird-related incidents happening on the runway.” BirdWize provides automatic bird recognition while also estimating the size of the bird and transmitting a real-time alert to an airport’s wildlife team. The system is built around a millimeter-wave radar and advanced radar and image processing to detect ground hazards. BirdWize also includes a comprehensive reporting feature that documents all birds and other objects detected to help determine a bird’s behavior patterns. In the U.S. flight crews and airport operators are encouraged to continue reporting all bird incidents to the FAA.
