Air Canada’s $6.5B Aircraft Order Firm

[Aviation Today April 1, 2014] Air Canada has finalized a $6.5 billion order for 61 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to lead its single-aisle fleet renewal plan.

Under the order, Air Canada will receive 33 737 MAX 8s and 28 737 MAX 9s, as well as 18 options and 30 rights to purchase additional 737 MAXs. Boeing is promising a 14 percent improvement in fuel efficiency with the 737 MAX over the Next Generation 737s.

The 737 MAX is scheduled to enter service in 2017, and features LEAP-1B engines from CFM International. "Projected fuel and maintenance cost improvements of more than 20 percent per seat will generate an estimated CASM reduction of approximately 10 percent compared to our existing narrowbody fleet," said Calin Rovinescu, president and CEO of Air Canada.
