King Air Pilot Was Wichita
Tower Controller
A veteran air traffic controller
from Wichita International Airport (ICT) was flying the King Air 200 that crashed into the
FlightSafety International (FSI) Cessna Citation Learning Center building on
October 30, according to the National Air Traffic Controllers Association
(Natca). Mark Goldstein, 53, who retired from the FAA earlier this year, had
just departed Runway 1R last Thursday, when he reported a problem with the left
engine and crashed into the FSI building while attempting to return to the
airport. Three people inside one of the simulators at the FSI building,
including a Russian pilot and a local translator (identified as Nataliya
Goynik), were killed in the accident, which ignited a fierce fire. Goldstein,
the only person on board the King Air, also died in the crash. NTSB
investigators on the scene reported that the instability of the FSI building
made it difficult not only to begin their investigation but also to search for
possible other victims.
