Aviation Safety: All Eyes on NCAA (Nigeria)
Aviation industry pundits argue that the scrapping
of a stand-alone Ministry of Aviation underscores the need for the Nigerian
Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to take its rightful position as the key
aviation department, writes Olaseni Durojaiye
The decision of
President Muhammadu Buhari to scrap a stand-alone Ministry of Aviation and
return it to the Ministry of Transportation from where it was initially carved
out have thrust the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in the klieg lights
THISDAY findings have revealed, even as stakeholders in the sector welcomed the
decision, insisting that it was what many in the sector have long clamoured
for.
The NCAA, the only civil aviation authority in the country
recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), in response
to THISDAY enquiries insisted its lost its independence as an independent
regulator to the Ministry of Aviation since 2006. They are of the opinion that
the loss of independence has led to a number of airlines and airport safety and
security related challenges in the sector.
