Imperial War Museums "Balboa", altså hvor alle flyene er med, blir ikke den samme etter at det berømte flyshowet er flyttet. Kun Spit`ene er igjen. Og museene. Flott det og, men ikke det samme. It was here that pilots learned to fly the revolutionary bi-planes of the First World War. It was home to subsonic jet fighters during the Cold War. And it eventually became the award-winning museum we know today. But it was during the Second World War that Duxford made history. By 1939, Duxford was a sector station of No.12 Group Fighter Command. Eventually a ‘Big Wing’ of five squadrons flew from Duxford and Fowlmere (Duxford’s satellite airfield), led by Squadron Leader Douglas Bader. The base, therefore, played an important role in the summer of 1940 during the Battle of Britain, when Germany launched a campaign to take control of the skies. The RAF aircraft took off from Duxford to defeat the German Luftwaffe and force Hitler to shelve his plans for an invasion.     DUXFORD BATTLE OF BRITAIN AIRSHOW Witness daring air displays, dogfights and aerobatics – ending with the splendour of our now famous mass Spitfire flypast in the skies where history happened. SELLING FAST         Duxford later became the base of the RAF’s first Hawker Typhoon wing, which flew in support of a raid on Dieppe in August 1942. By April 1943, RAF Duxford had become Station 357 of the US 8th Air Force, home to the 82nd, 83rd and 84th Squadrons of the 78th Fighter Group. The full-throated roar of the Spitfire was replaced with the rumble of the P-47 Thunderbolt, and from December 1944, the high-pitched whistle of the P-51 Mustang. And when dawn came on 6 June 1944 – D-Day – P-47 Thunderbolts took off from Duxford, flying in support of the Allied fleet invasion.
