A plane carrying 58 passengers and four crew has crashed in the Brazilian state of São Paulo.

The twin-engine turboprop plane was flying from Cascavel in the southern state of Paraná to the main airport in São Paulo city when it came down in the town of Vinhedo, the Voepass airline says.

Footage circulating on social media shows a plane descending vertically, spiralling as it falls.

"There is still no confirmation of how the accident occurred or the current situation of the people on board," the airline says in a statement.

Local authorities say the plane landed on a residential building.

Police and fire services are at the scene and local hospitals have been alerted.

Narrative:
A Voepass Linhas Aéreas ATR 72-212A (ATR 72-500), performing flight PTB2283, became uncontrollable and crashed near Vinhedo, São Paulo.
The 58 passengers and 4 crew members perished and the aircraft was destroyd.

Online videos show the aircraft in a fully developed spin with little to no forward speed before it impacted a residential area and burst into flames.

The flight had departed Cascavel Airport, PR (CAC/SBCA) at 14:58 UTC, bound for São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport, SP (GRU/SBGR). The aircraft climbed to a cruising altitude of FL170 until ADS-B data show the aircraft entering a sudden sharp descent at 16:21 UTC.
