The
final report into May 2024 severe turbulence event has been published by
Singapore TSIB
On 21 May 2024, an aircraft levelled at FL370 west southwest of Yangon in
smooth flying conditions clear of cloud encountered a single unanticipated
and very short episode of severe convectively-induced turbulence. One
fatality, 56 serious injuries and 23 minor injuries occurred amongst the
211 passengers and six of the 15 cabin crew were injured, five seriously.
It was not clear whether there had been very brief cloud penetration but
convective cloud was rapidly building in the general area including below
the aircraft. A diversion to Bangkok followed to facilitate urgent medical
attention. The cabin interior was
extensively damaged.
