On 15 November 2012, the new ICAO 2012 Flight Plan will be implemented. This has been an ongoing project for at least four years to update the current ICAO Flight Plan Form and to take into account the improved technology for the newer aircraft, the emergence of automated Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems, and ensure compatibility with existing technology and systems.

ICAO has worked with all the States and their Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) to ensure the implementation will run smoothly. Most of the States are ready and it is anticipated that the implementation should be successful.

However, ICAO has joined with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO) to establish a global coordination centre at ICAO Headquarters in Montréal, Canada to monitor the implementation and provide a link between, States, ANSPs, and operators where necessary. In addition, all States have been tasked with instructing their ANSPs to issue a trigger NOTAM to indicate the state of readiness.
