The Aircraft About to Brutally Break the Rules of Aviation

Under the watchful eye of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, an extraordinary creation has been taking shape – a remarkable aircraft that emerged as the culmination of groundbreaking innovation.

The new unmanned aerial vehicle, designated X-65 after a long line of iconic experimental aircraft, will ditch all traditional control surfaces that had limited aerodynamics for generations. Instead, it will find control from within.

The X-65 will feature active flow control rather than passive exterior-moving controls and redefine aviation with compressed air nozzles to execute maneuvers, subverting long-held tenets of aviation and aerodynamics. The advances expected from this project seem taken out of a science fiction story.

They could usher in a new era of reduced radar cross-sections, increased maneuverability, and unparalleled efficiency in flight. Besides drones, this technology would make fighter aircraft more agile and commercial passenger airliners more environmentally friendly.

By “removing jointed surfaces,” such a design could improve flight and reduce cost and wear and tear, and also theoretically enhance the aircraft’s stealth characteristics.

The X-65 will include “modular wing configurations that enable future integration of advanced technologies for flight testing,” DARPA noted in a January release.

CRANE has been in the works for several years now, and the contract with Aurora Flight Sciences marked the beginning of the program’s Phase 2, which will include the development of flight software and controls and a critical design review of an X-plane demonstrator.

The contract includes an option for a Phase 3, which would involve flying the 7,000-pound X-65.

The Australian government has announced that MRH-90 Taipan helicopters will not return to the skies, after the fleet was grounded pending investigations into the latest aircraft accident.

It’s been confirmed that the troubled Australian Defence Force military transport helicopters will not return to flying operations before their planned withdrawal date of December 2024.

They will instead be replaced by the introduction into service of the new fleet of UH‑60M Black Hawk helicopters. Three Black Hawk helicopters have already arrived in Australia and were scheduled to begin flying in September this year.

The fleet has been stood down since July when an MRH-90 helicopter crashed south of Hamilton Island while participating in Exercise Talisman Sabre.

Earlier this year in March, the ADF also temporarily paused training activities and grounded the MRH-90 Taipan fleet after a Taipan multi-role helicopter ditched into NSW waters during a routine counterterrorism training exercise.

The latest incidents follow suspended flying operations in June 2021 after issues were found relating to the aircraft’s IT support system, as well as a tail rotor vibration problem identified at HMAS Albatross in 2019.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles said advice provided to government has outlined that ongoing investigations into the Taipan are likely to continue well into 2024 and Defence will not fly the platform until investigations are complete.

“The MRH-90 has been an important capability for our country and Defence Force, and I recognise the hard work of the hundreds of people who dedicated themselves to acquiring, operating, and sustaining the aircraft,” he said.

“The first of the 40 Black Hawks that will replace the MRH-90 have arrived and are already flying in Australia. We are focused on seeing their introduction to service as quickly as possible.

“The government’s highest priority is the safety and wellbeing of our people.

“We continue to support the families of the four soldiers who lost their lives earlier this year, and the broader Defence community.”

The government is understood to be exploring options to accelerate the delivery of Black Hawks to Australia and for aircrew training with our international partners.

From 2025, the new AH-64E Apache helicopters will also be introduced into service for the Australian Army.

“The Australian government recognises the unique and highly valued contributions of skilled defence industry workers,” said Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy.

“We are actively working with industry partners to transition the skilled workers supporting MRH-90s to the Black Hawk program and Army’s other helicopters.”

The Australian government also stated that today’s announcement does not presuppose or any way suggest the outcome of the investigations into the tragic incident on 28 July, when an MRH-90 Taipan impacted waters near Lindeman Island, Queensland, during Exercise Talisman Sabre.

JOBY DELIVERS FIRST EVTOL AIRCRAFT TO U.S. AIR FORCE

Joby Aviation has delivered an air taxi to the Edwards Air Force Base in California about six months ahead of schedule, marking the first-ever delivery of an eVTOL aircraft to a paying customer in the U.S., the company announced Monday. 

This is the first of up to nine eVTOL aircraft that Joby intends to supply to the U.S. Air Force under its $131 million Afwerx Agility Prime contract. The second delivery is on track to arrive in early 2024, Joby executive chairman Paul Sciarra said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Edwards on Monday morning. 

“Today's delivery of a Joby aircraft to Edwards Air Force Base marks the culmination of seven years of a very significant public-private partnership between Joby Aviation in the Department of Defense,” Sciarra said. “It's a partnership that over time has extended across a wide range of stakeholders, including the Defense Innovation Unit, Afwerx Agility Prime, NASA, the Air Force, the Marines, and many others. 

“The early interest that the DoD showed in Joby's capabilities had a profound impact on our company and, from my perspective, the future of electric flight here in the U.S.,” he added. “Today's delivery is a hugely significant moment for Joby and for our industry—but more than that, it's a validation of the long-term vision of the Department of Defense.”

The U.S. Air Force, which is exploring defense applications for eVTOL aircraft, granted military airworthiness approval for Joby’s five-seat eVTOL aircraft in December 2020. Since then, USAF test pilots have had several opportunities to take the aircraft out for a spin at Joby’s flight testing facilities in Marina, California, where the company has set up a pilot production plant. Last week, Joby announced plans to build a scaled production facility in Dayton, Ohio

Now the military will begin testing flight operations with the aircraft on base, where it will be used to demonstrate “a range of logistics missions, including cargo and passenger transportation,” according to Joby. The USAF will also take the opportunity to train its pilots and maintenance personnel on eVTOL aircraft and their operations. 

“Agility Prime’s stated objective in 2020 was to work towards an operational capability for transformative vertical lift in the DoD by 2023. The arrival of Joby’s aircraft at Edwards AFB is an important step towards achieving this objective,” said Col. Elliott Leigh, Afwerx director and chief commercialization officer for the Air Force.

SAS bids farewell to Boeing 737 fleet in upcoming special flight

SAS Scandinavian Airlines is nearing the end of its Boeing 737 era as part of cost-cutting efforts and fleet optimisation. On November 19, 2023, SAS’s last Boeing 737 (LN-RRB), known as Dag Viking, will embark on its final commercial flight, between Stockholm and its home Oslo, under the appropriate flight number SK737.

The airline’s financial outlook is improving, with its first quarterly profit since 2019, signifying progress in its recovery journey.

In response to post-pandemic challenges and financial difficulties, SAS has accelerated its transition to a more streamlined aircraft fleet based on Airbus aircraft.

SAS currently operates a fleet of 94 aircraft, primarily narrowbodies and regional jets for its extensive European network. While the Boeing 737 family played a significant role in the past, the Airbus A320 aircraft now take precedence. The fleet includes three Airbus A321s, 47 Airbus A320s, four Airbus A319s, 17 Mitsubishi CRJ-900s, seven ATR 72s, seven Airbus A330s, four Airbus A350s,, and last but not least, five Boeing 737-700s.

The remaining five Boeing 737-700s are among the oldest in the fleet, with an average age of 18.9 years. Historically, SAS has operated a total of 116 Boeing 737 family aircraft.

The flight number SK737 used to be assigned to flights from St. Petersburg and Copenhagen, but for evident reasons this route is no longer flown.

Satellite imagery shows Russia is now painting the silhouettes of Tu-95MS “Bear-H” strategic bombers in parking revetments at its master bomber base, Engels Air Base, also known as Engels-2. The base has come under repeated attack over the last year and as Ukraine's standoff weapons capabilities are rapidly evolving, so are its abilities to strike deep inside Russia using local sabotage and drone attack teams.

Planet Labs satellite imagery obtained by The War Zone that was taken on Sept. 29 shows the two-dimensional decoys adorned on Engels’ tarmac — a near 'copy-paste' of the four-engine bomber’s distinctive planform right down to its black-painted cockpit area. A second painted decoy appears partially complete next to the finished one. It's worth noting that it is possible that these are some sort of low profile cloth/canvas or other decoy, but it has little to no vertical dimension, so paint is most likely.

T-600 Drone Deploys Sting Ray Lightweight Torpedo

BAE Systems and Malloy Aeronautics have demonstrated the capabilities of the T-600 heavy lift uncrewed air system (UAS) during a large NATO exercise in Portugal to integrate the very latest maritime technologies across allied forces.

The T-600 is an electric-powered demonstrator aircraft capable of vertical take-off and landing, can carry a payload of 200kg and can travel at up to 140km/h. It also has a range of up to 80km depending on payload. It is around the size of a small car and is designed to be easily disassembled for transportation. During the multinational exercise, the demonstrator successfully released an inert Sting Ray training variant anti-submarine torpedo during a flight mission at sea for the first time.

The exercise known as REPMUS (Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Uncrewed Systems) involved 15 NATO partners, along with Ireland and Sweden. It provides a safe and controlled area to test concepts, requirements, new and advancing technologies in respect of Maritime Uncrewed Systems.

The T-600 demonstrator is designed to develop, validate and display technologies which may be applied to the T-650, a completely new design of an all-electric heavy lift UAS which will offer rapid reconfiguration capabilities applicable to military, commercial and humanitarian uses. The T-650 will provide significant capabilities in the areas of automated logistics and resupply, casualty evacuation and anti-submarine warfare whilst reducing the environmental impact of our armed forces.

In just two years since we launched our collaboration with Malloy, we’ve developed a heavy lift UAS and working with the UK Royal Navy and Portuguese Navy, have taken part in the latest NATO REPMUS exercise. The demonstration showcased the capability of our T-600 technology demonstrator, carrying an inert Sting Ray torpedo in front of the world’s premier naval forces. It’s a fantastic achievement in our collaboration with Malloy and a sign of our joint ambitions to bring new capabilities to our customers.
