Marine F-35 involved in fiery mishap at Miramar base in California; pilot ejects safely

An F-35B Lightning II jet crashed and burned at Marine Air Station Miramar on Friday, the Marines confirmed.
The aircraft was part of the 3rd Marine Air Wing, Marine Aircraft Group 11 at the base north of San Diego, according to 1st Lt. Blake Starbuck, a spokesman for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.

Narrative:
A USMC Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II, operated by the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Aircraft Group 11, crashed short of runway 24 at MCAS Miramar (NKX/KNKX) San Diego, California.
According to witnesses, the plane was on a normal approach when it slowed down to transition to a vertical landing before crashing into the ground.
The pilot was able to eject and was transported to a medical facility for evaluation and treatment of his injuries, although his life is not in danger.
The aircraft was destroyed.
