Gripen skyter sin første Meteor missile - Janes

Gripen E fires Meteor missile for first time

The Saab Gripen E fighter has conducted its first firing of the MBDA Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM), it was announced on 30 August.

Test aircraft 60-02 launched the missile at an altitude of 16,500 ft over the Vidsel Test Range in northern Sweden “in late May/early June”, a Saab official told Janes and other defence media.

According to the announcement, the test saw “a successful end-to-end result on the target”.

With a published speed of more than Mach 4 and a range in excess of 100 km, the Meteor has been described by industry and military officials as providing a step change in air-to-air combat capabilities. Whereas similar-type missiles have a relatively short boost-phase after launch, after which they glide to the target while bleeding energy, the Meteor's ramjet means it is propelled up to the point of impact. This reduces the adversary aircraft's chances of escaping the missile and gives the pilot more assurance of success when engaging enemy aircraft.

The Meteor programme partners include France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, and the missile has been sold to Brazil, Egypt, Greece, India, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea.

Jet2 flight diverted as passenger became aggressive over lack of champagne

A Jet2.com (LS/EXS) flight was reportedly diverted to Munich on Friday after a 70-year-old woman became aggressive and violent when she was informed that “free champagne” was not part of the service.

Videos of the pensioner have been shared on social media platform TikTok of the event which happened on a flight from Manchester to Rhodes.

According to reports, the woman started lashing out after cabin crew took away her Gin & Tonic following her aggressive behaviour and after hitting her own head on the overhead bins, hit a male crew member twice.

The woman was arrested on arrival at Munich Airport and potentially faces charges of being drunk on an aircraft and assault after which the flight continued without her.

A spokesperson for Jet2 confirmed the incident saying: “We can confirm that flight LS819 from Manchester to Rhodes was diverted to Munich Airport so that a disruptive passenger could be offloaded. We would like to apologise to customers for this unforeseen delay and any inconvenience caused.

“The health and safety of our colleagues and customers remains our number one priority and, as a family friendly airline, we take a zero-tolerance approach to disruptive behaviour. We will not hesitate to vigorously pursue any costs incurred as a result of this diversion.”

Army grounds entire CH-47 Chinook helicopter fleet over engine fires

The Army has grounded the entirety of its CH-47 Chinook helicopter fleet “out of an abundance of caution” after an undisclosed number of recent engine fires, the service confirmed Tuesday evening.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the move to shut down the Boeing-made fleet. No deaths or injuries occurred due to the fires.

In a statement emailed to Army Times, Army spokesperson Cynthia Smith attributed the issue to fuel leaks. She indicated that the service has “identified the root cause” of the leaks and “is implementing corrective measures to resolve this issue.”

Engine manufacturer Honeywell International told Army Times in a statement that the leaks were due to faulty aftermarket O-rings that weren’t produced by the company.

In full coordination with the U.S. Army, Honeywell helped discover that O-rings not meeting Honeywell design specifications had been installed in some T55 engines during routine and scheduled maintenance at an Army Depot,” the statement said. “It is believed these suspect O-Rings have been identified and isolated.”

Smith’s statement tried to downplay the scope of the problem, declaring that “some aircraft may not require corrective measures and may soon return to normal flight operations.” Army officials did not respond to questions from Army Times about the repair timeline or its potential impact on training and operations.

The Army spokesperson did not specify how many aircraft had caught fire and how many required corrective maintenance. According to the Wall Street Journal, service officials have identified at least 70 aircraft with the faulty part out of the Army’s approximately 400 Chinooks.

While a joint team of Honeywell and Army engineers identified the engine problem, it’s not clear when they realized they needed to look for it.

A July aviation safety bulletin published by the service’s Combat Readiness Center highlighted an incident where a hovering Chinook had to land and use its fire suppression system to address “a small active fire near the aft portion of the No. 2 engine.” Army Times previously covered CRC officials’ efforts and process for reconstructing accidents.

Smith added that the grounding was meant to “ensure our aircraft remain safe and airworthy.”

SEATTLE, Aug. 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and the Lufthansa Group today celebrated the delivery of the first 787 Dreamliner, a 787-9, to Europe's largest airline group at Paine Field, Everett, Wash.

The Lufthansa Group has 32 firm orders for the 787 and joins nearly 50 customers worldwide in operating the industry's most fuel efficient and capable airplane. Boeing designed the 787 family with superior efficiency, which allows airlines to profitably open new routes and fly people directly where they want to go in exceptional comfort.

Using 25% less fuel and creating 25% fewer emissions than the airplanes they replace, the 787 family has avoided more than 125 billion pounds of carbon emissions since entering service in 2011.

"With the Boeing 787, we are introducing another modern aircraft type that is one of the most fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft in our fleet," said Jens Ritter, CEO Lufthansa Airlines. "This will allow us to significantly further improve the average CO2 balance. This aircraft is sustainable and offers customers a premium flying experience."

Since revenue service began in 2011, the 787 family has launched more than 325 new nonstop routes around the world, including approximately 50 routes opened since 2020. The 787-9 can fly 296 passengers up to 7,565 nautical miles (14,010 km) in a typical two-class configuration.

"Today's delivery to the Lufthansa Group is a significant milestone for both companies as we resume European 787 deliveries and Lufthansa receives its first 787. I am delighted to see Lufthansa join a growing set of airlines worldwide operating the industry's most capable twin-engine airplane," said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "With unmatched fuel efficiency and huge passenger appeal, the 787 will play an integral role in the Lufthansa Group's long-haul network."

In addition to 32 787 Dreamliners on order, the Lufthansa Group has firm orders for 20 777-9 passenger airplanes and recently placed a firm order for seven of the new 777-8 Freighter.

The bird strike resulted in a canopy broken and emergency landing.

The Red Arrows were performing at Rhyl Air Show in the afternoon on Aug. 28, 2022, when the display team was forced to cut short their display after Red 6 suffered a bird strike. As a result, the canopy of the jet was smashed forcing the aircraft to declare an in-flight emergency and head back to Hawarden Airport, the air base used for the team’s Rhyl displays over the weekend.

Images and videos of the Hawk with the damaged canopy started circulating online, shortly after the jet’s successful emergency landing.

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — Ramstein Air Base will host its second Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting next week, Air Force officials said Monday.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has invited defense leaders and senior military officials from around the world to discuss the crisis in Ukraine and various security issues facing U.S. allies and partners, U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa said in a statement.

Defense leaders from more than 40 nations attended the first gathering at Ramstein in April, about two months after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since then, the group has held three more meetings. The last one was held virtually from the Pentagon in July.

Plans for the Sept. 8 Ramstein meeting come amid concerns that fighting near a Ukrainian nuclear power plant could trigger a radiation catastrophe.

Russian forces have occupied the Zaporizhzhia plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, since the early days of the war.

First MH-139A Helicopters Delivered To U.S. Air Force

0

Boeing and Leonardo have delivered the first four MH-139A Grey Wolf twin-engine helicopters to the U.S. Air Force. The four test aircraft are part of a $2.4 billion contract awarded to Boeing in September 2018 for up to 80 helicopters, training systems and associated support equipment. The aircraft are intended to replace the Air Force’s fleet of aging UH-1N Hueys.

“We are thrilled that the first four MH-139As have been accepted by the U.S. Air Force,” Leonardo Helicopters U.S. CEO Clyde Woltman said. “This aircraft is well-positioned to become an important asset in the defense and security of the United States.  I especially want to thank the combined program teams at Leonardo and Boeing whose tireless work and ingenuity made this possible.”

Based on Leonardo’s AW139, the MH-139A is a multi-role helicopter designed for missions including protecting intercontinental ballistic missiles and transporting U.S. government officials and security forces. The aircraft is produced at Leonardo’s facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Boeing is responsible for military equipment procurement and installation along with post-delivery support for the model.
