Kill Devil Hills

(Red.)

D-Day squadron of World War II planes re-creates ‘Blue Spruce’ route to Europe

By

STARS AND STRIPES • May 16, 2024

“That’s All Brother” was a lead aircraft in the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944. The plane led a formation of 800 other C-47 aircraft that dropped 13,000 U.S. paratroopers on D-Day. The restored plane has been described as a “flying museum.” (DC-3 Society)

WASHINGTON — World War II aircraft that moved troops and cargo across the North Atlantic to Europe are being retooled, fueled and readied to make the same journey the aircraft did 80 years ago for a commemorative flight to pay tribute to the D-Day invasion.

Those C-47s could only carry about 30 people so when we say they transported troops it must not have been many. Guys sent overseas were mostly sent by ship.

D-Day remembrance planes will be found, says Shapps

Atlas A400 planes are currently being used in Ukraine and the Middle East

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has said more planes will be found to take part in a mass parachute drop for this year's D-Day commemorations.

One plane is available for the Parachute Regiment to use in events to mark the 80th anniversary in June with four needed, according to the Mail on Sunday.

"I certainly want to see that [the D-Day event] properly covered," Mr Shapps told the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme.

He added that the issue had only been brought to him "very recently".

The planes that would be used, Atlas A400s, are currently involved in military operations, including the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Mr Shapps added that the lack of available planes to attend the commemoration was one of the reasons he had argued that more money needed to be invested into the armed services.

D-Day commemorations are held to mark the beginning of the campaign to free north-west Europe from the Nazis during World War Two.

This year's events will take place on 5 and 6 June in Portsmouth and in Normandy in France. More than 1,600 members of the British Armed Forces will be involved.

A Parachute Regiment source told the Mail on Sunday that the regiment wanted four of A400s for the day, to allow about 450 paratroopers to take part.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said the commemorations would "offer a comprehensive programme of tributes from today’s Armed Forces to their forebears" with "a significant amount of activity in both France and the UK, involving thousands of personnel, Royal Air Force flypasts, and Royal Navy vessels".

They added: “This will include a commemorative jump by UK paratroopers from an A400M aircraft on the 5 June alongside Allied counterparts.”

Largest Global Airlines

The skies of April 2024 were dominated by the colossal capacity of North American carriers, with United Airlines (UA) retaining its crown as the world's largest airline based on Available Seat Miles (ASMs). Boasting a staggering 25,586,308,401 ASMs, UA cemented its position as a global leader, showcasing its extensive network and ability to move passengers across vast distances.

Hot on their heels were American Airlines (AA) and Delta Air Lines (DL), further solidifying the strong presence of US carriers on the global stage. Interestingly, AA offered the most flights (178,878) and seats (22,691,087) in April 2024, highlighting their widespread network and commitment to passenger volume.

However, the landscape wasn't solely painted red, white, and blue. Emirates (EK), carved out a unique space among the top contenders. Despite operating a significantly lower number of flights and smaller fleet, compared to its American counterparts, EK secured the fourth position with an impressive 18,077,349,430 ASMs. This achievement reflects their strategic use of larger aircraft on all routes, allowing them to efficiently transport a bulk of passengers across continents.

Following closely behind was Southwest Airlines (WN). Despite offering a whopping 19,642,215 seats, their focus on shorter domestic routes translated into a lower ranking in terms of ASMs (15,083,550,638). The remaining global airlines showcased a diverse range of airlines, each with its own strengths and specialties.

From the high frequency of shorter flights within Europe by Ryanair (FR) to the long-haul dominance of Qatar Airways (QR) and the extensive regional network of China Southern Airlines (CZ), April 2024 offered a glimpse into the dynamic and ever-evolving world of global aviation.

Irans president med i helikopterhendelse - CNN

Siste fra CNN:

Iranian official says contact with 2 people aboard president's helicopter indicates crash was "not severe"

From CNN's Adam Pourahmadi and AnneClaire Stapleton

Iranian officials have spoken to two people on the same helicopter as President Ebrahim Raisi since it crashed Sunday, Iranian Vice President for Executive Affairs Mohsen Mansouri told the country's semi-official FARS news agency.

Because officials made contact "several times" with a passenger and member of the flight crew shortly after the crash, "It appears that the incident was not severe," Mansouri said.

Three helicopters were flying on the same route before two lost contact with Raisi's helicopter, Mansouri said.

"The Ministry of Communications and other security agencies have identified the incident area within a 2-kilometer radius. Due to weather conditions, access to the area is challenging," he said.

(Red.)

CNN —

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has been involved in an incident while he was visiting neighboring Azerbaijan, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on X on Sunday.

“Some of the president’s companions on this helicopter were able to communicate with Central Headquarters, raising hopes that the incident could have ended without casualties,” it added. It is unclear what the exact status is of Raisi’s helicopter.

The helicopter was part of a convoy of three helicopters. Two of those helicopters were carrying ministers and officials who arrived at their destination safely, according to Tasnim.

“Seyyed Mohammad-Ali Al-Hashem, Tabriz’s Friday Prayer Imam, and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian were also reportedly on the helicopter with the president,” Tasnim said on X.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
