BA has announced that it is launching its largest pilot recruitment programme in more than a decade.
The flag carrier said that it is planning to “take on more than 800 new pilots by 2016” by using a combination of three recruitment schemes to be called the ‘Future Pilot Programme’.
The programme includes the recruitment of qualified pilots from other airlines, an initiative with the UK’s armed forces to provide “military pilots with a planned career path into commercial aviation” and help for approximately 400 applicants “to gain a place at an approved flight training school, with successful candidates landing a job as a British Airways pilot”.
The British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA) described the announcement as a move in the right direct and said it was pleased that the airline “is not only recruiting new pilots in order to expand its operations, but also ensuring that it is allowing the best pilots, not just those with the most money, to fly for them”.
BALPA also said that it believes “that the pool of pilots should be made up from the most able and talented, not from those who can afford these huge fees. Restricting access to flying to only the most affluent is wrong and hampers social mobility”.
