An FAA draft
rule to inspect some in-service Boeing 737 MAXs for spoiler wire bundle chafing
would give operators 36 months to check their fleets and affects all aircraft
rolled out before mid-2022, when the issue was addressed on the production
line.
The
agency's March 11 draft airworthiness
directive (AD) is based on a July 2023 manufacturer's
bulletin that is now public. The bulletin lists affected 737 MAXs by line
number—about 860 airframes produced through mid-2022, including 207 on the U.S.
registry. Boeing, which manufactures 737 wings in Renton,
Washington, has built about 1,600 737 MAXs to date.
