NATO Engages Russian Threat to Alliance Airspace in First
Russian drones were shot
down by NATO fighter jets over Polish airspace Sept. 10, alliance
officials told Air & Space Forces Magazine, marking the first time
allied aircraft have used force to defend its airspace. The Russian
drones entered Polish airspace during a large-scale aerial attack on
Ukraine, prompting NATO to scramble Dutch F-35 and Polish F-16 fighters
and activate air defenses, officials said, in a dramatic escalation of
tensions on the continent. Read more ►

Some 19 Russian drones entered Polish
airspace overnight, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said. Polish and Nato
aircraft were scrambled and airports shut. Tusk said at least four drones
were shot down, marking the first time Russian drones have been downed
over Poland. Russia's top diplomat in Warsaw said claims his country's
drones entered Polish airspace were "groundless". The drones
were part of the latest aerial attack by Moscow on Ukraine. The country's
President Volodymyr Zelensky called the escalation an "extremely
dangerous precedent for Europe". The key question for the continent,
writes security correspondent Frank Gardner,
is whether or not this was a deliberate act by the Kremlin to test Nato's
response.

Poland has experienced several violations of
its airspace since neighbouring Ukraine was attacked by Russia in
February 2022. However, this latest incursion - sizeable, and deep into
Polish territory - sparked real nervousness in Warsaw, writes Laura
Gozzi. Russia said that "no objects on Polish territory were
planned to be targeted," but experts and analysts are divided over
Moscow's motivations. The US reaction will be closely followed. In a
short statement on social media, US President Donald Trump wrote: “What’s
with Russia violating Poland’s airspace with drones? Here we go!”

Over the past couple of days two bellicose countries have
breached the borders of countries with which they are not at war. The
incursions are not similar, but in both cases the consequences are
serious.
At least 19 Russian drones violated Poland’s airspace, bringing
the NATO country closer to open conflict than at any time since the second world war, its prime minister said. How the alliance now responds
is crucial,
as we explain. | | |
