The
US may have violated international law by striking a boat allegedly
carrying drugs in the Caribbean, legal experts have told BBC Verify.
The White House said the attack killed 11 drug traffickers, and US
President Donald Trump said the boat was bound for the US from
Venezuela. One expert said the strike could amount to an "extrajudicial arbitrary killing" and was likely "unlawful under the law of the sea".
However, the US is not a signatory to the UN convention of the same name. As well as international law, experts also assessed whether the
strike complied with US laws. A White House official told Verify the
president was committed to using all means to prevent drugs reaching the US. |
