President Trump’s call for allies to send warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open may be premature - especially as there’s no evidence that this war is ending.

The reality is that even the US Navy is currently not escorting tankers through this narrow shipping lane.

At present it appears too dangerous - with a number of tankers trying to transit already having been hit.

President Macron has said France is willing to send warships to the Gulf as "purely an escort mission". But he also said that would only be after the most "intense phase of the conflict had ended".

US Expands Middle East Military Presence Amid Iran-Israel Tensions, USS Tripoli Deploys Marines

The United States is significantly expanding its military footprint in the Middle East, sending thousands of Marines and a powerful amphibious assault ship to the region as tensions with Iran intensify. The deployment comes amid a rapidly escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran that has already triggered missile strikes, drone attacks and regional instability across the Gulf.
According to reports, the Pentagon has ordered the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA-7) and its Marine Expeditionary Unit to deploy to the region, bringing thousands of combat-ready troops and advanced military equipment closer to the conflict zone.
