F-35 Program Shifts Focus To Defining Cooling System Upgrades


A Lockheed Martin F-35A took off on Jan. 6 for the first time with the L3Harris Integrated Core Processor, a powerful new flight computer that—along with several new mission systems—is pushing an overworked cooling system even harder.

U.S. and international F-35 operators are defining the requirements for the next major aircraft upgrade to follow and complement the Block 4 and propulsion system efforts, with a significant evolution in the active and passive systems used to cool down the stealth jet’s increasingly powerful engine even further.
