A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212, operated by the No. 7 Helicopter Squadron, crashed into the Maduru Oya Reservoir shortly after it took off from a helipad at Sri Lanka Army Special Forces Training School Maduru Oya. The helicopter was transporting soldiers for a demonstration at the passing out parade of the same training school. The twelve army and air force officers were rescued, but unfortunately six succumbed to their injuries.
The wreckage of the Bell 212 was pulled out of the water the following day (May 10th) and the extent of the damage was properly seen for the first time. The helicopter was damaged beyond repair.
