On
19 September 2023, an air ambulance helicopter attempting to recover an
injured hiker from a mountain site west of Pirongia by winch was
descending on the windward side of a ridge when control was lost and the
aircraft suddenly dropped and impacted terrain. The three occupants
were uninjured but the helicopter was severely damaged. The loss of
control was attributed to entry into a vortex ring state due to a
combination of the aircraft's rate of descent and low forward speed with
the presence of orographic lift across the ridge.
