Det skriver The Guardian.

Søndag møtes europeiske toppledere for å diskutere krigen i Ukraina.

Flere aviser og medier skriver omtrent tilsvarende:" Go it alone, Europe".

- Nato sine siste dager

(Red.)

WARSAW, Poland — The Polish Ministry of National Defence has signed a $300 million deal to lease eight Boeing AH-64D Apache helicopters from the United States this year. The contract comes in anticipation of the deliveries of 96 AH-64E copters Poland ordered in August 2024.

Speaking at the official signing ceremony on Feb. 27 at the 56th Aviation Base in Inowrocław, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and National Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said the intention is to prepare the air force for operating a large Apache fleet designed to boost its attack capabilities.

“In 2028, we are awaiting the first 15 of the 96 units that we ordered last year for a considerable amount of 10 billion dollars,” Kosiniak-Kamysz was quoted in a statement released by his ministry. “This is why we are leasing today, we are spending $300 million on this, so that our pilots, ground crews can get familiar with this gear, learn all the skills, take control of it.”

Deliveries of the 96 aircraft with related gear and weapons are scheduled to be completed in 2032. Once the helicopters are supplied to Poland, the country’s military is expected to be the second-largest user of the Apaches in the world after the United States.

Under the offset agreements concluded as part of the procurement, Polish defense companies will be involved in servicing and upgrading the helos.

All, So sad to hear of John’s untimely passing. He will be missed. He gave so much to his home organisation, IFALPA, his community and aviation safety. Fondly remembered. Greg From: Maureen and Frank Santoni <sesixth2@outlook.com> Sent: Saturday, 1 March 2025 2:48 pm

In memory of John Kristoffersen

Written by: Union leader Synnøve Egeness Lilleli and deputy leader Jo Bjørn Skatval

John Kristoffersen, our dear friend and colleague, chairman of the Norwegian Pilots' Association's Aviation Safety Committee, passed away suddenly on Saturday 22 February. One of the warmest hearts in Norwegian aviation suddenly stopped beating.

John began his long flying career in the air ambulance service in the autumn of 1994. He flew missions to save lives and transport the sick for 23 years, out of the bases Alta and Tromsø. A service and a job that leaves its mark and that gets a special place in those of us who have practiced and lived it - also John spoke several times warmly about this time and the importance of the job.

In 2018, John went to Svalbard and flew Coast Guard assignments with Dornier, among other things, until he retired early as a pilot.

- "No as I am retired", he often said when it was at its worst in the federation world with large and several issues that had to be handled at the same time. A retirement unlike any other. John has always been involved in trade union work and aviation safety work in addition to his flying career. He sat for several years as Lufttransport Flygerforening's accident investigation representative, local runway safety team and later in the Norwegian Pilots' Association's HUPER section (human performance). Here he worked both nationally and internationally, and quickly became a name that was recognized far beyond our country's borders.

In 2023, John took over as chair of FSIK, the aviation safety committee, in NF.

His competence, work capacity and ability to say what many people think, but do not say for various reasons, made John a fantastic resource and one to be trusted.

Now that spring is getting brighter, and perhaps the big work projects were completed, John was looking forward to being able to go down to his beloved Italy. A small place where he had also found friends with his open and honest northern Norwegian personality. That was perhaps his dream, when he would one day retire for "real"; to just live in the moment, philosophize with a good glass of red wine in hand, and look out over the Italian landscape.

You then went in far too early for landing, long, yes far too long before our flight plans dictated. John; You will be missed, but never forgotten!

Fly, fly off where the sky is always blue,

Up and off from the turbulent and grey.

Days of sunshine and nights reflected in the Northern Lights,

Twenty-foot tall

-They are the memories now.

Jeremy Bowen: Trump-Zelensky row signals looming crisis between Europe and US

EPA Zelensky and Trump in the White HouseEPA

The relationship between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky was bad enough before the shouting match in the Oval Office.

President Trump had already called him a dictator and said Ukraine started the war - which is a lie.

Now the US-Ukraine alliance nurtured by Joe Biden is in pieces.

The public breakdown also signals a major crisis looming between European members of Nato and the US.

There will be many more doubts and questions about the US commitment to European security outside Ukraine. The biggest is whether President Trump would keep the promise his predecessor Harry Truman made in 1949 to treat an attack on a Nato ally as an attack on America.

Those concerns are based on what appears to be Trump's determination to restore a strong relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He has put heavy pressure on Ukraine while offering Putin big concessions - that would have to be made by the Ukrainians.

The security of Ukraine is coming a poor second - and Europeans are worrying theirs is too.

President Zelensky's refusal to make those concessions has infuriated Trump.

·         Follow live reaction and analysis

It's not just the minerals deal that he refused to sign. Ukrainians believe they are in a war for national survival - and that Putin would break any promise to end the war if he is not deterred.

That's why Zelensky asked repeatedly for American security guarantees.

The meeting ignited into a shouting match after an intervention by Vice-President JD Vance.

There are suspicions now that the public row was - in the words of one diplomatic observer - a planned political mugging: either to force Zelensky to do America's bidding, or to precipitate a crisis that would allow them to blame him for whatever happens next.

If Trump follows the breakdown of talks with a freeze on military aid, Ukraine will fight on. The questions are how effectively, and for how long.

Pressure will redouble on its European allies to take up the slack.
