European Court of Justice backs EU airline carbon tax

 The tax had been fought by US airlines

EU plans to levy an emissions tax on airlines are valid, according to the European Court of Justice (ECJ).
The charges mean all airlines flying to and from the 27 states of the European Union have to pay a tax on emissions.
US, Canadian and other carriers argue the charges violate climate change and aviation pacts and referred the charge to the ECJ.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a warning of "appropriate action" should the charges go ahead.
