Modified Boeing 747 In Refuelling Tests With SR-71
This photo of a Boeing 747 modified to a tanker configuration conducting a dry refueling hookup test with an Air Force/Lockheed SR-71 Mach 3 long-range reconnaissance aircraft on a flight from Edwards AFB, Calif, appeared on the October 2, 1972 cover ofAviation Week & Space Technology. USAF was making the evaluation to determine the feasibility of using large transport aircraft to fill a future requirement for new tanker aircraft.
