| Hello from the FT newsroom. Volodymyr Zelenskyy is facing the biggest political crisis of his wartime presidency,
after he unexpectedly moved to seize control of Ukraine’s independent
anti-corruption bodies on Tuesday. The move — which appears to have been
sparked by investigations into members of Zelenskyy’s circle — has
triggered fresh allegations of an authoritarian power grab. Meanwhile,
as the clock runs down on Donald Trump’s 50-day ultimatum to Vladimir
Putin — to agree a ceasefire or face tougher sanctions — Russia
continues to extend its gains in Ukraine. Our reporters revealed this
week that the proportion of Russian drones hitting Ukrainian targets has tripled in recent months. As
our chief economics commentator Martin Wolf explains, all of this
matters. The outcome of Russia’s war will shape not just the future of
Ukraine, but of European liberal democracy itself. |
