The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a 
₹2,312 crore (approximately $280 million) contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on February 12, 2026
, for the procurement of eight Dornier 228 aircraft

These aircraft are specifically equipped with Operational Role Equipment to enhance the Indian Coast Guard's (ICG) maritime patrol and surveillance capabilities.

    Aircraft Capabilities
    The Dornier 228 is a highly versatile twin-engine turboprop designed for multi-mission roles. For this ICG order, the aircraft will feature:
    • Advanced Avionics: Modern glass cockpit, indigenous Maritime Patrol Radar, and EO/IR sensors.
    • Mission Systems: An Integrated Mission Management System for coordinated coastal monitoring.
    • Operational Roles: Maritime surveillance, search and rescue (SAR), marine pollution response (oil spill monitoring), and medical evacuations.
