Kinas doktrine kikkes på her

US aircraft losses in Iran conflict are an omen for the Asia-Pacific

Aircraft losses sustained by the US military during the Epic Fury campaign against Iran offer a bleak foreshadowing of the attrition Washington and its allies will likely face in a conflict against China.

At the outset of the 40-day campaign on 28 February, Iran’s air force was crippled after decades of sanctions. Its inventory comprised dwindling numbers of legacy, Cold War-era aircraft such as Northrop F-5s, McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantoms, and Grumman F-14 Tomcats.

Well aware of these limitations, Tehran leveraged ballistic and cruise missiles. Yet even these struggled to penetrate advanced, layered American and Israeli integrated air and missile defence systems.

Ultimately, US and Israeli airpower inflicted massive structural damage on Iran's military infrastructure. But it came at a steep cost to the US aircraft fleet. According to a recent report from the US Congressional Research Service, 42 US aircraft were lost or damaged between 28 February and 9 April.
