United Parcel Service (UPS) has exercised all 14 Boeing 747-8 freighter options it had, firming the aircraft for delivery on “an expedited schedule.”
Atlanta-based UPS ordered 14 747-8Fs in 2016 and took 14 options. It took delivery of three 747-8Fs in 2017. The firmed options provide another boost to the 747-8 program, which has struggled with sales on the passenger side. UPS additionally has ordered four 767Fs.
The exercised options and four 767Fs are valued at a combined $6.5 billion at list prices. All 32 aircraft—the 28 747-8Fs and the four 767Fs—will be delivered by 2022, UPS said.
“All of the new aircraft will be added to the existing fleet and no existing aircraft are being replaced,” UPS said.
“Our growth opportunities are accelerating,” UPS CFO Richard Peretz said. Surging e-commerce orders requiring expedited delivery are driving strong growth for the cargo specialist.
The company’s international segment “has generated four consecutive quarters of double-digit export growth,” UPS chairman and CEO David Abney said Feb. 1.
In the 2017 fourth quarter, the international segment reported 13% year-over-year (YOY) revenue growth “driven by premium products,” UPS said. “Export shipment growth surged 16% per day. All regions of the world contributed to the expansion.”
Abney said the additional freighters have been ordered to “support this strong customer demand.” He added that the tax legislation passed by the US Congress in late 2017 enables UPS “to significantly increase capital investments and to make them earlier than previously planned.”
UPS Airlines president Brendan Canavan said there is “unprecedented demand for our air products,” adding, “The new freighters will allow us to continue upsizing aircraft on routes and will create a cascading effect that will boost capacity on regional routes around the world.”
UPS noted the 747-8F carries 46 shipping containers and has a cargo capacity of 307,600 pounds (approximately 30,000 packages). It has a range of 4,200 nautical miles.

Helikopter - Britisk stealth helikopter fra 80-tallet avslørt - FlightGlobal

Do you remember another so called stealth helicopter which ended up in somebody`s backyard? (Ed.)

How the UK had a stealth attack helicopter design proposal almost a decade before the US RAH-66 Comanche. Former Leonardo Helicopters Chief Engineer on the Merlin Mk3 and Apache, JEREMY GRAHAM FRAeS reveals archive details of this never-before publicised Westland Helicopters low observable chopper proposal from the 1980s that have just come to light.

Image of one configuration of the WG 47 stealth attack helicopter that was studied by Westland as a private confidential proposal for the UK MoD requirements. Note that this is not the final WG 47 configuration described in the text below (Leonardo MW).
In 1984 the Westland Future Projects team proposed a solution to GST 3971, the “Light Attack Helicopter”, based on the Lynx/W30 dynamics family and identified as WG 44. This was the first of several AH proposals that incorporated low observable technologies across the broad spectrum of detectable signatures. These technologies in themselves derived from company experience with unmanned aircraft system design completed for projects SUPERVISOR and PHOENIX in the period 1977 to 1983.
The definitive development of the low observable AH project, by then identified as WG 47, was completed in 1987, as a confidential private venture activity running in parallel with the multi-national A129 LAH study led by Agusta but supported by Westland, Fokker, MBB and CASA. The WG 47 configuration defined an aircraft having a faceted fuselage with internal weapons, twin canted tail rotors and the pilot in the front seat of a tandem cockpit. Engine, environmental and cooling systems exhausts were integrated into a side-exiting infra-red suppressor and the cockpit transparencies were angled outward to eliminate optical glint to the horizon.

Many of these design solutions presaged the US Army RAH-66 Comanche helicopter which was first shown in public at its roll-out in 1995. Some of the fuselage shaping principles developed for the AH studies were proposed by Westland for NH90 during the multi-national Feasibility and Cost Definition Study involving France, Germany, the UK and Holland: the production aircraft retains these features to this day.

An exclusive full article on this previously confidential Westlands helicopter project, only now unearthed in the company archives, by Jeremy Graham FRAeS will appear in a forthcoming edition of AEROSPACE magazine.

Moscow flight diverted to Atlantic City International Airport

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - A Russian flight headed from Moscow to Cuba was diverted Wednesday morning to Atlantic City International Airport after it suddenly became low on fuel, according to the federal Customs and Border Protection agency.

Mid-Atlantic spokesman Steve Sapp said the plane had to make an emergency landing in Atlantic City to refuel about 3:45 a.m. Once the plane landed, inspectors realized there was a fuel leak in the engine and it would not be able to take off again. Mechanics certified on the Boeing 767 worked to repair it, Sapp said.

The airline, Azur Air, was taking 294 passengers and 14 crew members to Havana, Cuba, through the tour company, Anex Tours.

A second jet arrived from Azur Air at about 7 p.m., and once loaded with passengers and baggage, it was scheduled to take the passengers Wednesday night to Cuba, Sapp said.

"From what we we're told, the flight that is supposed to take them to Cuba will be leaving Atlantic City around 9 o'clock tonight," Sapp said Wednesday evening.

The consulate general of the Russian Federation in New York had tweeted about the plane's status Wednesday.

The South Jersey Transportation Authority and local and State Police, as well as the FBI were on the scene assisting Wednesday. Sapp said Border Protection, which maintains a presence at Atlantic City International, although there are no public international flights, is the lead agency in this incident.

"We are because these are foreign nationals who do not have visas to enter the U.S.," he said.

Sapp said that although the flight did not have FAA clearance to land in the United States, the health and safety of the passengers superseded that.

"The passengers and crew are being taken care of right now. We have cots for them. People are bringing in food," Sapp said. "They're in generally good spirits. They just want to get on the next flight out to get their vacation started."

The passengers rested in a secured section of the airport, Sapp said. Besides cots and food, officials from local and state agencies, the South Jersey Transportation Authority and local volunteers provided water, comfort and language assistance to the stranded passengers, Sapp said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers paroled the 14-person crew into this country to rest at a nearby hotel to prepare for their later Wednesday flight to Cuba, Sapp said.

Rowan University history professor James Heinzen, a scholar of Russian history, was called in to serve as a translator.

He said this situation is "a good example of people coming together to help people who need some help."
