Kvinner i lufta - Det er for få

Inaer Fields Initial All-Female EMS Crew in Spain

Pilot Beatriz Parera, medic Gloria Palacios, Salobrar Sanchez and Rocio Ramos make up Spain’s first all-female medical helicopter crew, according to Avincis Group subsidiary Inaer. The crew operates a Eurocopter EC135 for the Extramadura Health Service from the Malpartida base in Cacares. Inaer flies 27 EMS aircraft in Spain, performing more than 8,000 air medical missions during 2012.

F-22 Raptor

USAF F-22 Raptors participate in Trident Warrior 2013

According to a USAF release, the goal of the exercise was to integrate fourth and fifth-generation fighters using an experimental version of the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS)—which uses the Link 16 waveform. Aircraft participating in the exercise included the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, Boeing F-15C, F-15E and Navy F/A-18s. There also some Langley-based Northrop Grumman T-38s and USN E-2 Hawkeyes involved.
“This data link will give us a holistic view of what we are fighting against so we can focus on tactics without the need for constant updates,” says Lt Col Brian Beales, 1st Fighter Wing plans, programs and evaluations office chief. “Without that whole picture, the chances of loss of life or resources can increase greatly.”
Currently, the while the Raptors can link-up with each other with their intra-flight datalink (IFDL), the F-22 does not have Link-16 transmit capability. The Raptor can, however, receive data from other platforms using the Link-16 waveform. According to the USAF, this new technology will allow F-22 and fourth-generation jets to share data freely.
While the USAF release did not explicitly state this, the service did release pictures of a business jet equipped as a communications node to relay data between the jets. It is very likely that the “new technology” mentioned here is in fact a variation of the Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) or something similar.

The USAF release cites Capt Pete Tymitz, a 94th Fighter Squadron flight commander, who says if the new technology is implemented; it will afford pilots the opportunity to share tactical information between all aircraft.

I’m going to see if I can get some more details on this. I’m off to Oshkosh on Sunday for some civilian nonsense, so DEW Line might be a little quiet in the meantime.

100th F-35 enters final assembly

A

The 100th Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter has entered the last stage of final assembly, the company says. AF-41 will be the first F-35 to be based at the USAF’s second training site for the jet at Luke AFB, Arizona.  The jet is one of 126 F-35s in various stages of production around the world. Luke will eventually be home to six squadrons of F-35s with a total of 144 jets.

Six-month safety figures maintain gradual improvement

Worldwide airline fatal accidents in the first six months of 2013 maintained the all-time best figure of nine, while the number of fatalities involved set a new low of 58.
Such a short period has limited statistical significance in its own right - especially since safety has become so good that the numbers are tiny - but in comparison with the same period in each year for the last decade, the trend indicates that an established gradual improvement is being maintained.
The very low fatalities figure this year so far will probably prove to be a matter of chance. The first six months of last year was more typical, with 338 casualties in the period. The low figure results from the fact that none of the passenger aircraft that crashed happened to be large, and they were carrying small passenger loads. Nevertheless, survivability in modern hulls continues to be a favourable factor. The Lion Air Boeing 737-800 that crashed into the sea short of the runway at Denpasar in Indonesia caused injuries among its seven crew and 101 passengers, but no fatalities.

Honda Debuts New Jet at Oshkosh

Two of Honda Aircraft's new light jets made their first public appearance Monday with a flight demonstration at the Experimental Aircraft Association's (EAA) AirVenture Oshkosh 2013 show.

The two jets are the third and fourth "FAA-conforming models" from Honda, as the N.C.-based manufacturer has produced six HondaJets since 2010, four flight test and two structural test aircraft, all of which are being used for testing to meet FAA certification requirements.

“EAA AirVenture Oshkosh has special significance for me. This event is where I introduced the proof-of-concept HondaJet to the world for the very first time. It was truly the beginning of Honda’s exciting venture into aviation,” said Michimasa Fujino, president and CEO of Honda Aircraft.

HondaJet seats up to five passengers, and features composite fuselage and Over-The-Wing Engine Mount (OTWEM) configuration.  In May the fifth FAA-conforming HondaJet completed its first flight, climbing to 12,000 feet and reaching a top speed of 300 knots.

The company is targeting FAA certification of the $4.5 million HondaJet by the end of 2014

A Swiss adventurer, known as 'Jetman', has made his first public flight in the United States.
Yves Rossy wore a custom-built jet suit which has four engines and is controlled with a throttle.
He described his flying as "total freedom" and will be taking part in a week of air shows in Wisconsin
