BOAC de Havilland Comet - Rekordflyet presentert via Twitter

 

Vårt nest siste bilde er av vår de Havilland Comet 4, G-APDB. Denne #Comet var den andre av et parti for #BOAC og ble levert til dem i september 1958. Bare et par uker senere fløy hun den første planlagte tjenesten noensinne operert av et jetfly fra vest til øst over Atlanteren. Hun forlot New York og ankom London bare 6 timer 12 minutter senere etter å ha passert søsterskipet PDC og laget historien selv ved å fly i motsatt retning. Etter tjeneste hos BOAC ble hun solgt til #MalaysianSingaporeAirlines hvor hun tilbrakte de neste fire årene før hun ble solgt til Dan-Air og returnerte til Storbritannia. #DanAir brukte henne hovedsakelig på feriefly før pensjonering ble regnet i november 1973. I lyset av PDBs historie donerte Dan-Air henne til East Anglian Aviation Society i februar 1974. Da #DAS ble dannet i 1975 ble PDB det første flyet i British Airliner Collection.

WASHINGTON — A small number of F-35 fighter jets have temporarily been barred from flight after a pilot crashed one of the planes this month while testing it at a joint base in North Texas, officials said Wednesday.

The F-35B was going through testing before delivery to the Marine Corps when it encountered trouble while hovering over a runway at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth in Texas on Dec. 15.

Sikorsky Protests Losing Army Contract

As often happens with such things, Sikorsky has lodged a formal protest of the Army’s decision to go with competitor Bell’s V-280 Valor as its Future Long Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA). Sikorsky, which is owned by Lockheed Martin, teamed with Boeing to offer the DefiantX. It is protesting the $232 million contract that will cover the final design work and program development. It includes no aircraft. The protest automatically puts a stop to all work covered by the contract for at least the next 100 days. After the design is complete, the Army will pay a total of $8.2 billion to get the aircraft into production. Entry to service is expected in the mid 2030s.

The two aircraft are radically different. The winning Valor, which will take over from the venerable Sikorsky-built UH-60 Black Hawk, is a tiltrotor while he Defiant has counterrotating rotors with a pusher prop. Sikorsky said in a statement the Army got the contract award wrong.  “The data and discussions lead us to believe the proposals were not consistently evaluated to deliver the best value in the interest of the Army, our soldiers, and American taxpayers,” the statement said.

An anonymous source told to Defense News that a propulsion system issue led to the Dec. 15 crash of the hovering F-35B, which has now led to broader groundings in the fleet.

After a crash involving an F-35B on Dec. 15, 2022 in Fort Worth, Texas, the F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) has released a statement to Defense News confirming that it had issued guidance to ground a limited number of newer F-35s.

According to the JPO statement, “The F-35 Joint Program Office has issued a Time Compliance Technical Directive (TCTD) to restrict some aircraft, which have been evaluated to be of higher risk, from flight operations while the investigation into the mishap on December 15 continues and until procedures can be developed for their return to flight. The affected aircraft have been identified, and the JPO will work with the [U.S. military] services and [international] partners to ensure compliance with the TCTD.”

As already reported, the pilot involved in the F-35B incident that took place at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth, on Dec. 15, ejected safely. The plane had not yet been transferred to the US government.

Lockheed Martin manufactures the F-35B for the US Marine Corps (USMC). Lockheed Martin’s final assembly plant for the F-35 shares a runway with Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth. As part of the test flight for the F-35Bs – which is known for its ability to have a short takeoff and vertical landing – pilots will take the aircraft up to test its ability to hover.

The F135 engine that powers all versions of the F-35 is made by Pratt & Whitney.

The source explained that, in guidance to the services, the JPO said a failure of a tube used to transfer high-pressure fuel in the fighter’s F135 engine prompted the office to update its safety risk assessments.

The JPO also told the services that jets with fewer than 40 hours of flying are affected, this source said.

In its statement released on Dec. 27 to Defense News, the JPO said the groundings were put into place after a “preliminary assessment of the risk” and that it was taking steps it hoped would allow the directive to be modified sometime in January.

Noteworthy as we have already explained the Israeli Air Force (IAF) reported on Dec. 25, that following the F-35B crash in Fort Worth, 11 of its F-35I fighter jets will be grounded.

The F-35 is developed, produced, and supported by an international team of government allies and aerospace industry leaders. The F-35 Program is managed by the Pentagon’s F-35 Joint Program Office, the US Air Force, the US Marine Corps and the US Navy are all procuring and operating F-35s. There are eight international program partners — the US, United Kingdom, Italy, Netherlands, Australia, Norway, Denmark and Canada. Nine Foreign Military Sales customers are also procuring and operating the F-35 ¬— Israel, Japan, South Korea, Poland, Belgium, Singapore, Finland, Switzerland and Germany.

To date, the F-35 operates from 26 bases worldwide, with nine nations operating F-35s on their home soil. There are more than 875 F-35s in service today, with more than 1,845 pilots and 13,350 maintainers trained on the aircraft.

How many items are on a pilot checklist?

In aviation, a preflight checklist is a list of tasks that should be performed by pilots and aircrew prior to takeoff. Its purpose is to improve flight safety by ensuring that no important tasks are forgotten. Failure to correctly conduct a preflight check using a checklist is a major contributing factor to aircraft accidents.

According to researcher and writer Atul Gawande, the concept of a pre-flight checklist was first introduced by management and engineers at Boeing Corporation following the 1935 crash of the prototype Boeing B-17 (then known as the Model 299) at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, killing both pilots. Investigation found that the pilots had forgotten to disengage the crucial gust locks (devices which stop control surfaces moving in the wind while parked) prior to take-off.

‘The shortest one I know of was the spin recovery checklist for the USAF T-38 Talon. It was a bold-faced checklist, which meant we were required to memorize it verbatim.

‘It was the bailout checklist for the original ejection seat—the one I rode when I flew T-38s.

‘The USAF replaced that old ejection seat about a decade ago and the new one has a loop to pull instead of arm handles that need to be raised to expose the triggers that need to be squeezed. So, the ejection checklist could now be a single item. And I suppose everyone is required to memorize that one, too. LOL.’


WHAT’S THE LONGEST CHECKLIST?

Wagner continues;

‘According to an article appeared on Flight Safety Australia, the record holder is the engine start checklist for the Convair B-36 Peacemaker.

‘The article says that it took the ground crew six hours to prepare this 10-engined Cold War strategic bomber for a mission, after which the flight crew took another hour for a preflight check of 600 items.

‘With six huge radial piston engines and four jet engines, it must have been long.

‘And it was a bomber, with far more systems than just the ten engines, such as armament, four bomb bays and associated doors, and guns and a galley.

‘And it had a crew of 15 and one of those crew members was the flight engineer who had a scope that could monitor the condition of all 336 spark plugs.
