A Boeing 787 Dreamliner took off Monday morning with a new lithium ion battery intended to address smoke and fire issues.
The 787, built for LOT Polish Airlines, left Paine Field, in Everett, at 12:11 p.m., about an hour after originally scheduled, according to FlightAware. It landed at 2:20 p.m.
The flight was functional check flight that Boeing routinely conducts before delivering an airplane to a customer, rather than a test flight to certify the new battery.
"The crew reports that the flight went according to plan," Boeing said in a statement. "(C)rews cycled the landing gear and operated all the backup systems, in addition to performing electrical system checks from the flight profile."
Boeing said it will "analyze the data from the flight and begin preparations for certification ground and flight demonstration in the coming days." The company said it plans one certification demonstration flight, using the same jet, to show that the new battery system performs as intended during flight conditions.
The Federal Aviation Administration and other regulators grounded 787s worldwide in January, after a battery fire in a Dreamliner parked in Boston and an overheated battery that led to an emergency landing of another 787 in Japan.
Earlier this month, the FAA approved Boeing's plan to get the 787 back in service.
