American Airlines to Equip A320s with ROPS
American Airlines is equipping its fleet of A320 family aircraft with Airbus' Runway Overrun Prevention System (ROPS) onboard cockpit technology.
Airbus said ROPS computes in-flight landing and on-ground stopping distances while comparing them to available landing distances in real time. The system produces audio alerts for pilots, acting as a situational awareness tool for pilots approaching the runway.
EASA first approved ROPS for the A380 in 2009, and the system is currently in service with about 70 percent of A380s operated worldwide. The company expects ROPS certification for the A320 later this year.
“Our pilots appreciate the operational benefits that this industry-approved cockpit technology will bring to their daily work," said Capt. John Hale, vice president of flight for American Airlines.
