Boeing Seeks Approval for
Updated Jet
Boeing is likely to seek approval
from its board as early as next month to start taking orders for an updated
version of its 777 passenger jet, industry officials said Monday.
The company plans to add
lightweight carbon-composite wings and new engines to the popular model to take
advantage of new technologies that it developed for its 787 Dreamliner and to
cut fuel usage by perhaps 20 percent. The 777 holds a sweet spot in the growing
commercial plane market. It seats more than 300 people, but with only two
engines, it is cheaper to operate than the largest planes, like the Boeing 747
or the Airbus A380.
