Harrier jet crashes in California town
Pilot ejected before fighter plane came down and set houses on fire in second crash of Harrier from Yuma airbase in a month
A military jet has crashed on a residential street in a southern California desert community, setting two homes on fire. The pilot ejected and there was no immediate word of any injuries.
Marine Corps Corporal Melissa Lee said the pilot ejected safely and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. There was no word on whether anyone on the ground was hurt.
Witnesses said two houses caught fire after the crash on Wednesday evening in Imperial, population 15,000, near the US-Mexico border about 90 miles east of San Diego.
Lance Corporal Christopher Johns, a marine spokesman, said the jet was a Harrier from the Marine Corps air base in Yuma, Arizona, but he had no further details.
It is the second crash in a month of a Harrier jet from the Yuma air base. On 9 May a pilot was able to eject safely before his jet crashed in a remote desert area near the Gila River Indian community in Arizona, south of Phoenix. The plane broke up in flames but no one was injured.
