Garuda med megahandel hos Boeing

Boeing lands $4.9 billion jet order

Boeing, the world's largest aerospace company, on Sunday announced a massive order for 50 jets worth $4.9 billion.

The order came from Garuda Indonesia, the flag-carrier airline of Indonesia that is named after a mythical, giant bird.

While the huge order had previously been accounted for on Boeing's Orders and Deliveries website, it had been not been attributed to a specific customer until now.

The move takes place amid an airline industry eager to update with more fuel-efficient planes. Garuda Indonesia currently operates 77 Boeing 737s. Specifically, the airline will purchase 46 737 MAX 8s and will convert existing orders for four Next-Generation 737-800s to 737 MAX 8s.

Despite ambitious plans to expand its international network and notwithstanding a high-profile launch of Jakarta-London services on September 8, Garuda Indonesia has decided to take a more conservative approach this year after posting a group operating loss of $234 million in the first half of the year, compared with a $10.92 million loss in the same period in 2013. Plans now call for Garuda to strengthen its domestic operations while relying on its membership with the Skyteam alliance to expand its international network.  The airline has also announced plans to defer aircraft delivery, cut out unprofitable routes and reduce capacity growth.
