Vulcan to the Sky Team presenterer Eric "Winkle" Brown

(Red.)

The Life of Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown – A Talk by Nicholas Jones

Join us at our Stratford-Upon-Avon Central Stores on 12 November at 2:00pm to hear Nicholas Jones talking about the life of Eric 'Winkle' Brown

The flying exploits of Captain Eric "Winkle" Brown RN have become legend to a legion of aero-enthusiasts in the United Kingdom and around the world. Yet what was he really like as a person?

To his surprise, film-maker Nicholas Jones was one who perhaps got a better idea than most, albeit in the later years of Eric’s life. He met Captain Brown as a result of making TV documentaries about Sir Frank Whittle, the Father of Jet Propulsion. Whittle and “Winkle” became friends in 1944, during the RAE tests of the early Whittle turbojets.

Yet it would not be until 2005, when making a new Whittle documentary, that he got to meet him in person.

Eric soon started talking about the traumatic aftermath of the sinking of his carrier HMS Audacity in 1941. “I got the impression of a veteran who remained deeply affected by war but would not show it. I also realised he was a man who took no nonsense”.

Nick was astonished to learn what Winkle really thought of Mountbatten, Doenitz, Harold MacMillan and even Ed Milliband MP (!) “I learned a lot about his political beliefs and his views on the merits of various royal pilots. I realised he was a strange mixture of stern Fleet Air Arm commander and irreverent chappie who really had little time for those in high places. I can see why he did not make flag officer”.

He instead flew 487 different types of aircraft – an unbeatable record – and survived numerous accidents. Vulcan enthusiasts will be particularly interested to know how much he loved the country’s fabled V-Bombers and the Canberra. Sadly he did not fly the Vulcan but his 487 includes the Valiant.

Here is your opportunity to learn about the man from the person who perhaps knew him best.
