Russia reveals its desire to resume its joint project with Boeing

Tuesday 26 August 2025 01:40pm News / Stock market News

Russia is seeking to resume work on the joint project with the American company Boeing in the Sverdlovsk region, as revealed by the First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, Denis Manturov, in an interview with the TASS agency.

The project, which involves the Russian VSMPO-AVISMA company, the world's largest titanium manufacturer, and Boeing, a leader in aircraft manufacturing, had been suspended since 2022 after Boeing announced a halt to its purchases of Russian titanium amid geopolitical developments.

Manturov clarified that Russia has not imposed any restrictions on titanium exports to the United States, emphasizing that the American market can still obtain Russian titanium directly.

The Russian official pointed out that the decision lies with the American companies themselves, and that Moscow is not obstructing this path, opening the door for the possibility of resuming cooperation between Boeing and Russia in the near future.

The joint project established years ago was a key pillar in the supply chain of titanium for the global aviation industry, as Boeing relies on Russian materials to manufacture important parts of its aircraft. Its suspension in 2022 raised many questions about possible alternatives to meet the needs of the American company, especially since Russia is one of the leading producers of titanium globally.

Through this approach, Russia is trying to reaffirm its position as a key player in the strategic mineral markets, and its ability to supply major companies like Boeing still exists despite Western sanctions.

Additionally, the talk of resuming the joint project reflects Moscow's desire to maintain its position within global supply chains and not to lose its status in the civil aviation industry.

Experts believe that the future of cooperation between Russia and Boeing will depend on the United States' stance on continuing to rely on Russian titanium, especially amid the current political tensions. However, Manturov's assurance of no Russian restrictions leaves the door open for negotiations that could restore the joint project to its normal course if the political and economic will exists.

NATO warships sail into Barents Sea

"It is important for us to train together and have allied naval presence outside our northern coast," says Brynjar Stordal, spokesperson for Norway's joint headquarters.

29 August 2025 - 11:20

As of Friday morning, a multi-national group of naval vessels sailed east of North Cape in the Barents Sea. The Norwegian frigate Thor Heyerdal leads the way, followed by the naval logistic vessel Maud and two US Navy ships.

Military spokesperson Brynjar Stordal confirms to the Barents Observer that the naval vessels are operating together north of Finnmark.

"We want to show our presence with allied forces in the northern part of Norway," Stordal says in a phone interview.

According to online AIS tracking services, the naval group was around noon inside Norwegian territorial waters very close to the North Cape. At the nearest point, the Thor Heyerdal sailed less than one nautical miles from the steep cliff that forms Europe's northernmost tourist trap.

The waters here are of strategic importance in the bigger power game between NATO and Russia, just like during the days of the Cold War.

It is here, from North Cape, via Bear Island and north to Svalbard that the shallow Barents Sea meets the deeper Norwegian Sea.

In case of an escalating conflict the Russian Navy has the ambition to taking control of the sea in the maritime areas east of this imaginary line, and they have a sea denial ambition in the maritime areas further west and south, which are deeper than the Barents Sea.

Of key importance for Moscow in case of conflict is to ensure the survivability of its second-strike nuclear assets, the ballistic missile submarines based with the Northern Fleet on the Kola Peninsula.

In this scenario, sailing west of North Cape will make it much harder for NATO to track them in the deeper parts of the North Atlantic.

As reported by the Barents Observer earlier this week, all three Northern Fleet Yasen-class multipurpose submarines are currently at sea.

The warships that as of Friday are east of North Cape have earlier this week sailed together with the US Navy's USS Gerald R Ford strike group that moved north from the North Sea into the Norwegian Sea.

The USS Gerald R Ford is the world's largest warship, but is not following the Norwegian-led voyage into Barents Sea. The naval vessels, however, are maintaining operational contact with each other, although the giant aircraft carrier is still in the Norwegian Sea.

When the group operated in the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea, the USS Gerald R Ford was followed by three US Navy destroyers.

Other NATO warships that sailed together with the US carrier group earlier this week included the Italian frigate Carabiniere, the Danish frigate Vædderen and the US logistics supply ship Arctic.

Only the Norwegian vessels were sailing with their AIS turned on when they were in the Barents Sea on August 29.

Last fall, the two US Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Jason Dunham and USS Stout sailed the Barents Sea, but at that time outside Norwegian territorial waters.

USA beskylder Europa for dobbeltspill: Trump vurderer å trekke seg

Seniorrådgivere i Trump-administrasjonen beskylder europeiske ledere for å motarbeide fredsprosessen i Ukraina bak lukkede dører.

Ukraine shows off a deadly new cruise missile

But sceptics wonder if it is too good to be true

Earlier this month Ukraine unveiled a new cruise missile. With a declared range of 3,000km and a payload of over a tonne, the Flamingo packs a punch, on paper. If even half the claims hold, it has the potential to deal serious damage to targets almost anywhere in European Russia. Appearing in the middle of lumbering peace talks, the bird may help encourage Vladimir Putin to lay down arms. All the more striking, therefore, that the process of entering mass-production took just nine months, rather than the usual years or even decades, and was led by a management team that claims to have had no previous defence-industry experience. “I was very sceptical at first,” says one of the officials overseeing it, “but when I saw the missiles, I was stunned.”
