First CCA Takes Flight: General Atomics Drone Is First to Fly

The Air Force announced the first flight of General Atomics’ YFQ-42A on Aug. 27, a major milestone in the service’s effort to build semi-autonomous drones that can fly alongside manned fighter jets.

The Air Force's first Collaborative Combat Aircraft took flight Aug. 27, with General Atomics’ YFQ-42A winning the race to produce a flyable version of the weapons-carrying, semi-autonomous drone. The flight took place less than 21 months after Air Force first awarded design contracts, a feat Air Force Secretary Troy E. Meink described as a “record.” The the other CCA drone in development, the YFQ-44A developed by Anduril Industries, will begin flight testing “soon,” a company official said. Read more
