How an Alaskan Military Base Is Preparing for Trump-Putin Meeting
Defense One
An
Alaskan military base long used to intercept Russian aircraft is now
racing to welcome one instead. President Donald Trump will host Vladimir
Putin for an unprecedented summit at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson,
just north of Anchorage, a White House official confirmed to Defense
One. The joint Air Force-Army base, which today supports F-22 Raptors,
historically has been used to counter the Soviet Union and launch
intercepts of Russian and Chinese aircraft.

(Red.)

The lessons of Helsinki are clear: putting Donald Trump alone in a room
with Vladimir Putin is an unpredictable – and often dangerous – affair.

The war-ravaged Ukrainian territories at the heart of the Trump-Putin summit |

Russian forces continue to advance into Ukraine's east, but very slowly and at a great cost. Credit: BBC | With one day to go until the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders are feeling uneasy. They are concerned that the Russian president could persuade Trump to concede land in exchange for a ceasefire. While the Europeans were left cautiously optimistic following a virtual meeting with the US president on Wednesday, in which he agreed that any territorial agreements must be decided with Ukraine's involvement, the US president's previous reference to "land swapping" between Kyiv and Moscow means nervousness remains. Maps show the war-ravaged Ukrainian territories that could be at the heart of any concessions - an outcome Ukraine has repeatedly insisted it will not accept. |

Som jeg har skrevet før: Russland vil kreve landområder uten å tilby noe som helst. Zelensky vil ikke akseptere det og blir svarteper. Vel, faren for det er stor er jeg redd. (Red.)

Trump has warned of "very severe consequences" if Russia doesn't agree
to end the war with Ukraine after Friday's summit in Alaska. He also
mentioned the chance of a second meeting,
involving both Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President
Volodymyr Zelensky, which he said would be "more productive" than the
one scheduled for Friday in Alaska. After a call with Trump, European
leaders reiterated the need for Kyiv to be involved in any final
decision – betraying an underlying nervousness that Putin could
ultimately persuade Trump to concede Ukrainian land in exchange for a
ceasefire, writes Laura Gozzi. |

European leaders to increase pressure on Trump ahead of Putin meeting |

Zelensky is to hold virtual talks with European leaders and his US
counterpart on Wednesday, aimed at increasing pressure on Donald Trump
to side with Kyiv during Friday's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukraine is not set to attend the Alaska talks. European leaders
are expected to reiterate to the US president that no decisions should
be taken without Ukraine, including changing its borders by force.
Russia currently controls just under 20% of Ukrainian territory, and
Trump has said any peace deal would involve "some swapping of
territories". |

Ukraine surged some of its most combat- hardened forces to the eastern
Donetsk region to blunt a Russian advance some fear could lead to a
large-scale collapse on that part of the front. The battlefield moves come days ahead of a planned meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump
and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders are expected to
discuss a plan to end the war that could include freezing the front
lines where they are. Read More |
