Eurocontrol med safety innspill

Welcome to the June 2026 edition of SKYlight. This month, we

look at visual approaches. We also have several new and updated

articles prepared by members of our editorial team.

Visual Approaches:
Guidance for Flight Crews

Visual Approaches: Guidance for Flight Crews

Article Information

Description

Although flying visual approaches is a basic skill taught in primary flight training, this type of approach can present challenges for crews of transport category aircraft. Airline crews and other operators of transport aircraft become accustomed to flying instrument approaches, usually with a high level of automation. This can make the occasional visual approach somewhat difficult, especially if the approach is flown into an unfamiliar airport. Darkness or last-minute clearances for a visual approach can also become complicating factors. This article provides generalized guidance and does not supersede information in a company's standard operating procedures (SOPs) or other official publications. The information below assumes that the crew is flying a modern aircraft with a flight management system (FMS) and an electronic flight instrument system (EFIS).

Techniques and Considerations

•        Plan your descent.
•        Wherever possible, back up the visual approach
by loading an instrument approach in the FMS.
•        Use caution at airports with parallel runways,
•        Use mental math to help stay on a proper glide
         path.
Use navigational tools on the multifunction display
          (MFD) to  maintain situational awareness.
•        But don't let the navigational tools trip you up.
•        Consider displaying terrain mode on the MFD.
•        Take care to maintain stable approach criteria.
•        Watch out for visual illusions.
•        Just say no. If circumstances make a visual                                     approach
difficult, you  can always decline the
visual  and request an instrument approach.
