GECAS Places Big Boeing Order
GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) placed a big Boeing aircraft order on Tuesday, purchasing 75 of 737 Max 8s and 25 Next-Generation 737-800s, in a deal worth $9.2 billion.
The order from GECAS comes one day after Boeing announced another large order of their 737s by Air Lease Corp. (LINK TO YESTERDAY’S STORY).
“The 737 MAX is a perfect complement to our airplane portfolio," said Norman C.T. Liu, president and CEO of GECAS. "These new Next-Generation 737 and 737 MAX airplanes will continue our long-standing strategy of providing our customers the most fuel efficient, most capable airplanes with the lowest operating costs.”
Boeing expects to deliver the first 737 Max in 2017.

Bell Pushes On With V-22 Tiltrotor Sales Drive
Farnborough Air Show » July 10, 2012
The drive to find international customers for the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor continues, prompting four U.S. Marine Corps MV-22s to make a transatlantic trip to fly displays and demonstrations here at Farnborough and at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) at Fairford last weekend. Aircraft for export could easily be slotted into the expected second American multi-year buy, Col. Greg Masiello, joint V-22 program manager, U.S. Naval Air Systems command, said here at the Farnborough International airshow yesterday. He did not identify potential customers, but serious interest from Canada, Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been reported.

Increased range and payload for the Airbus A330 twin-aisle twinjet, announced by the European manufacturer here at the Farnborough International airshow yesterday, will be welcomed by Malaysia Airlines (MAS), whose brand-new A380 very large airliner also opened the week’s flying-displays. After requests from owners and operators, Airbus is offering the enhanced performance, which will permit A330s to fly between Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur and Paris among other potential new city-pair services cited by Airbus chief operating officer for customers John Leahy.

Piaggio Launches Special-Missions Avanti IIAbu Dhabi Autonomous System Investments (ADASI) signed a contract with Piaggio Aero today at the Farnborough Airshow for the Piaggio Aero MPA (multi-role patrol aircraft), a new special-missions surveillance aircraft based on the P.180 Avanti II. The agreement calls for aircraft launch customer ADASI to provide financing for Piaggio to build two prototypes. First flight is scheduled for 2014. Saab’s defense and security division has been tapped as the MPA’s systems supplier and will develop and integrate a full suite of airborne sensors and surveillance systems for various special missions. This encompasses land, coastal, maritime and offshore security roles. The company called the MPA an “evolution” of the Avanti II platform. It will have a larger, reinforced wing that allows for a higher maximum takeoff weight and additional fuel capacity. The MPA will retain the same Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-66 engines found on the Avanti II. According to Piaggio, the special-missions aircraft will have an endurance of more than 10 hours, a maximum range of 3,300 nm and a ceiling of 41,000 feet. Top cruise speed is projected to be 350 knots. Piaggo would not say if the beefed-up wing, and its resulting improvements, will eventually be offered in a civil version.
Russian Helicopters Developing Smart AvionicsRussian Helicopters is developing a “comprehensive avionics system” for situational awareness, autopilot landing and collision avoidance, the company announced. It will be installed on all new Russian-made helicopters starting in 2015. With the system, crewmembers will be provided with images of the surrounding terrain, “including during maneuvers at low altitude in difficult weather.” In addition to improving situational awareness, the system will enable the aircraft to automatically hover above a given point and land. The new “intelligent” system will also inform pilots about hazards in the landing area. It could even automatically select an unprepared landing site in case of an emergency situation. Meanwhile, Russian Helicopters announced it is working on an advanced health-and-usage monitoring system (A-Hums). Via sensors and signals received from aircraft systems, the A-Hums will “in real time, discover and diagnose situations in which mechanical units and/or components face a risk of failure, determine trim balance and constantly monitor the blade track of the main rotor.”

Boeing eyes international orders for P-8A Poseidon
Boeing has not signed any extra customers for its P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, but the company expects to sign addition nations on after the aircraft becomes operational with the US Navy.
The P-8A is set to become operational in 2013, says Chris Chadwick, president of Boeing Military Aircraft. The programme is on schedule and on budget, he adds. The first few aircraft are already being used to train new aircrews in Jacksonville, Florida.
The US Navy plans to buy a total of 117 of the aircraft. India has ordered 12, but could buy more. Meanwhile, Chadwick says there has been strong interest in the aircraft from other foreign buyers.
Boeing is also pitching derivatives of the 737 airliner, on which the P-8A is based, for any mission currently flown by 707-based military aircraft. Those include a host of US Air Force and some US Navy platforms.
