Operator Groups Urge FAA Help To Lower ADS-B Cost
Fourteen aviation groups, including NBAA and AOPA, are calling on the FAA to work with industry to help bring down installation costs of ADS-B equipment on general aviation aircraft. In a January 23 letter to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta, the groups said only 8,800 general aviation aircraft have equipped with ADS-B so far and expressed concern that the cost of equipage is a “serious obstacle” for many aircraft owners. “We do not support limiting access to airspace that pilots and aircraft owners enjoy today,” the groups said. According to an AOPA study, 81,564 GA aircraft are worth $40,000 or less. Installation costs for a $34,000 Cessna 150 could be $5,000, or 15 percent of its value, the groups said. The FAA must make it a priority to work with industry to ensure GA can meet the mandate, they added. GAMA did not sign the letter, but Jens Hennig, vice president of operations for the association, said the FAA’s recently formed Equip 2020 group is already focused on simplified guidance and lowering equipment costs, but “would welcome constructive feedback from all groups interested in how best to equip GA aircraft with ADS-B by 2020.”
